View Full Version : Chain life

My chain has suddenly (or rather I just noticed) developed a large amount of slack. The wheel has not moved since ~ I bought locking nuts a little while ago... Which leads me to beleive it has gone out of whack in about 2 weeks. What is the length of life on a chain on a FG? And is there a certian style/brand of chain that will withstand the job better?

Are you sure it's your chain??? Rohloff and Park make tools that you can use to measure chain stretch; I'd go about this by a process of elimination, and not start by assuming it's your chain...

The chain should not be worn out in two weeks of riding. I don't care how hard you ride it. I average 2-3000 miles per chain and I'm conservative and will replace the chain sooner rather than later. I use a Park chain checker and replace it when it reaches .75 inches of stretch. Better to replace a 10 dollar cheap chain than a 100 dollar drive system that is worn out from running a stretched chain. Get the Park tool and then you will know when to replace the chain.

I use cheap $8 BMX chains..... they seem to hold up well.

i prefer to use the KMC 410H chains, but they aren't readily availible since KMC released the fruity-ass "Z" chain. the izumi eco gold chain is pretty much the same thing, but more expensive because it's "NJS" certed and gold.

Pretty odd that the chain would go slack all of a sudden, unless the axle slipped. I'm interested in hearing what else this could be.

I go for those $8 BMX chains, too. I like those silver KMC chains, just 'cuz they're purty. At that price, it's cheaper to replace 'em once a year than do extensive cleaning and squeezing all the life out of it.

Last night I went through everything, and indeed the newer BB had loosened up. I aslo cranked down the chain ring bolts (loose) and the cranks (also loose). I guess between newness, and learning to skid, the bike wasn't all togehter.

Kind of like 165's post yesterday.. tired.
