This might not exactly be the place for this post, but it is on a fixie....so...

I was riding along the other day, and I noticed that I was getting a slight pop somewhere in my drivetrain. Nothing to really throw me off, but I started to worry that this was one of those insidious things that doesn't seem like a big deal until the pedals fall off. I tracked it to the crank, and when push or pull on it laterally it shifts a very little bit.

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm sure this is very basic mechanics, but I'd rather not take this apart down to the bearings looking for the problem when all I really had to do was tighten a ring. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Is the chainring shifting on the crankset or is the crankset shifting from the bottom bracket or is the bottom bracket shifting inside the frame?

Tighten accordingly.

From what it sounds like, you need to tighten your bottom bracket. But as stated, it might be your chainring, you weren't specific enough. Easy enough fix though. good luck.

The first thing you need to check is chain tension. If you have one spot where the drivetrain is binding it will cause this noise.

2) chainline
3) cog/lockring tighteness
4) crankarm bolt torque
5) chainring bolt torque (make sure none are loose)

That pretty much covers the "omg i'm going to die if I don't check these things". Anyways, report back with results so we can suggest further action if needed.
