Northern California - I'm boycotting Road Bike Action Magazine

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Deleted blah blah blah blah blah blah blah that should be in the politics/religion forum but I don't want to share it with anyone in the politics/religion forum because it relates to California politics and I didn't want any Timbuktu Joe Weekendsprocket chiming in. I put it in NorCal because this is the only portal on this website that I post and actually know some of the people in the real world (and actually enjoy their real life persona). So therefore post as written deleted. FACT: I'm not buying Road Bike Action anymore. If you want to talk about it on a ride sometime, I am game. I hope no one was offended. If so, I apologize. That is all. Thanks.

Thanks for the info.
I like the magazine, but don't subscribe and most definitely won't now.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. In general I think people ought to be able to contribute to anything they like and if we disagree but they keep it out of business then I'll never really find out about it and that's the way it should be.

A similar thing happened quite a while ago with the guy who owned Domino's Pizza - word got out that he made a big contribution to an anti-abortion group and then somebody called for a boycot. This guy didn't put anti-abortion literature on his Pizza boxes, he didn't put subliminal messages in his commercials. He sold pizza, made money, and supported causes that he believed in. I thought the boycot was dumb but I always thought about that whenever I saw a Domino's car.

If this Hinz guy doesn't sneak anti gay stuff into his magazine, I don't really think he ought to be punished but I don't want to support him either (I've only bought one or two issues anyway so he's not going to feel much of an effect from me).

Thanks for letting us know, but now I wish I didn't.

If the profits from something you are buying are supporting a cause you don't agree with I don't see why you wouldn't want to spend your money elsewhere. If personal opinions were only personal the guy wouldn't be giving money to a legislative cause trying to strip rights from others.

Exactly. By purchasing the magazine, you are putting money in the pocket of the owner through whatever he takes for salary. Therefore, you are inadvertently supporting whatever charities/political stuff/etc. that he donates to.

Because I don't want to think about it. If I had to consider the political and philosophical and religious viewpoints of the people running the companies that I buy stuff from, it would become unbearable and probably impossible because these views are generally not public knowledge.

Do you know what organizations the publishers of any other magazines donate to? And why stop at publishers... how about editors or writers? They make money because of your purchase and might donate to some charities you find offensive.

Do you know what organizations the CEOs of Michelin or Vittoria or Hutchinson or Vredestein or Continental donate to? Probably not, and that's the way it should be. Do you really want to be making your purchasing decisions based on those kinds of issues?

I'm not advocating ignorance here, it really would be ridiculously difficult to take this idea very far. I draw the line at inserting these non-business related opinions into business. I don't go looking for what their opinions are, but once I know (like with RBA Mag and Domino's) I can't really ignore them either. I guess I'd also draw the line at something hateful or criminal but I don't think Prop 8 goes quite that far.

No need to involve SBW on this one. Post deleted. I'm already in trouble for a "touchy" subject a while back.... :innocent:

Didn't that magazine publisher try to destroy the VooDoo mountain bike company because they thought the bike company was anti-Christian? Sheldon Brown has an article about this on his web site.

Reminds me, a while back either Ben or Jerry did something to cause people to call for a boycott. The company had a post on their website about Ben's (or Jerry's) political views being their own, not representing the company's so we shouldn't take it out on the company. Which is a little hard to do since his name and photo are all over the products.
