Been thinking about riding from west to east coast or sfbay to LA/Seatle for a while and now i finally have the time.

Need to know what i need or how to find routes for free (checked with adventurecycling.com already)
as well as what i need to bring. I have a one man tent and lightweight sleeping bag as well as those side bags by the rear wheel. is this enough? What has BF done for food, thinking about freeze dried for later in the trip.

dont have anyone to take this ride with, and not sure whether or not i want to keep it that way

any advice, training reccomendations, experience stories, etc.?

welcome to touring!

there are hundreds of journals at www.crazyguyonabike.com, many have gear lists, and many are a variety of cross-continent-usa trips, for ideas about routes.

how much stuff people bring varies widely.

using drop boxes / freeze dried food is pretty uncommon among bike tourists, unless you are doing an off-road route. there's usually plenty of stores to buy 'real' food.

check out the touring forum here for people with more relevant information.

SF to LA is a great first tour - fabulous scenery, plenty of services, lots of great low-cost camping, great weather.

say hi to santa cruz for me, i miss it. can you please ride mountain charlie to eureka canyon for me? sigh. (ok, boulder doesn't suck either.... but santa cruz.... mmmmm)
