Fifty Plus (50+) - Wife Loves Bicycling Magazine!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Wife Loves Bicycling Magazine!
Somehow, as a result of something she signed somewhere, my wife is getting Bicycling Magazine.
And, to my absolute and utter surprise, she loves it.
She stayed up late last night reading some of the articles.
Heck, I gave it up a couple of years ago. Now she, almost 71, is eating it up!
Go figure.

I just subscribe to look at the photos of the hot guys with muscular shaved legs.
My mother in law gives a subscription to me each year for my birthday. I accept it in the spirit in which it was given; she's really making an effort to connect with me.
In any event, I'm really annoyed with them right now. They insist on mailing my copy along with the MountainBike mag (at no extra cost), and I've never found anything in MB that I want to read. To add insult to injury, they then include articles on mountain bike in the Bicycling magazine. Now, I recognize I have a strong bias against mountain bikes (to me it's like the difference between a Corvette and a Hummer, and I can't imagine ever wanting to own or drive a Hummer. I just have no interest). In any event, I've asked that they not mail the second magazine and not send Bicycling in plastic, but to no avail. In years past Rodale Press seemed to be a bit more "green" than they are these days.
Dnvr...be glad she does not throw it at you when you mess up, or does that ever happen.
Glad she likes it, keep up the good work.

I actually think it's improved in the past few months, compared to a few years back when you gave it up.

I get Bicycling and Mountain Bike and I enjoy reading both. They could be better, but there is always something in each issue that I enjoy, often several things.

I only get Bicycling for the articles. I never look at the pics.

I dropped my subscription to Bicycling a few years ago, it was OK, but seemed like a lot of fluff every month. I enjoy Road Bike Action, it comes out 6 or 8 times a year, can't remember. Good product reviews, new road bike tests, interviews with racers, bike builders and such. Some humorous content from time to time by Bob Roll. Not much fluff...

Oh, come on. Either she goes to bed at 9:30, or she reads particularly slowly. No one can stay up late reading the articles because each of the three articles takes only 5 minutes to read.

I admit it- but I have to say I did it in error. Saw a new magazine in the cycling section at the newsagents and bought it.
I promise that I will never buy bicycling magazine ever again.

I only get it, because I'm a life member of the L.A.B. Once in awhile, they'll run an article that grabs my attention.

Well, I haven't had hairy legs since I was in my 20's. I'm glad you approve. :D
I didn't renew a few years ago.
Seemed like there was not much for a road biker!

Good for her, I'm glad she enjoys it. I've been subscribing to it
for a few years now, again. I expect I'll not renew the subscription
when it comes due as I really don't enjoy it all that much any more,
but I tend tire of things quite readily.

I suscribe to Bicycling, but lately my wife has been buying me Cycle Sport America, which is mostly pro racing articles and photographs, but very well done with excellent writing. I'd recommend it, in fact!

There's enough for road bikers, but just not enough for regular, everyday cyclists. The cover photos pretty much tell it all: Riders in perfect condition, riding the very latest multi-thousand dollar exotic bikes, in the most exotic locations. Never a picture of say, a commuter riding through a downtown area on a bleak, wind-swept morning.
A better magazine, (in my own useless opinion) was "The Ride". Alas, they stopped publishing in '06, and were supposed to re-launch as "Bike Culture East", but I have not seen a copy of the new publication anywhere. I miss "The Ride". Much more for the everyday cyclist, who to work for a living and has responsibilities. Link to story (http://www.allbusiness.com/retail-trade/miscellaneous-retail-miscellaneous/4147136-1.html)

At the advice of this forum about a year ago I subscribed to Adventure Cycling Magazine.
It contained the worst prose I've ever read. The articles, to be succinct, sucked out loud and were, with rare exception, horribly written.
Bicycling Magazine is OK. I only get it for the pictures, though.

A year back or so I saw BCE in a newstand in Chicago.
My favorite is Cycling Plus, from the UK.

I stopped doing them because it was too easy.
Then I ran into an article or two that I liked.
Maybe next month...

I like Cycle Sport America, too, expecially for "Broomwagon" on the back pages. Reminds me a bit of Rolls Canardly's "Off the Back" column in Competitive Cycling.
I only look at Bicycling! for the photos of hot female riders with their shaved, muscular legs.
