It's funny what ends up on your bike... and which components mix seamlessly. My "posh" bike was Sora equipped from new, but I never miss out on getting some good stuff if it's on sale, to replace worn out parts etc. She now sports new wheels with Ultegra hubs and smart Mavic CXP21 rims plus Ultegra (SPD-r) pedals. All this alongside an 8 speed Sora drivetrain. Result: a great bike that I ride alot. The other bike is a mix of crazy parts too. Perhaps this is an affliction, does anyone else suffer?

Anyway, what should I call my bargain mixed combo?

Sortegra? Ultora? Sogra?

Cheers,

Ed

What Riphraph said. Mix in several bikes with varying levels of components and you will never have a single day where you aren't thinking about some new purchase or replacing/switching something out.

It's sick.

Nothing wrong with it.

Just consider my touring bike:

Brake levers - Shimano 600

Brake calipers - Tektro

Bar end shifters - Ultegra

Rear Derailler - STX

Front Derailler - basic shimano brand (came with bike and is 20+ years old)

Cranks - Sugino VP

Chainrings - MEC brand, except for the smallest ring which is Shimano 105.

Rims - Aurora

Hubs - basic Shimano brand

Pedals - Wellgo

Headset - basic Shimano brand

No where can you get a more mixed up bike than that! But I love 'er....

It's part of the fun as you ride more and get more parts. You get to where you have an old frame sitting around with about 75% of the parts you need to build it up. Lots of options then.

Sortegra? Ultora? Sogra? Shimuttno.

Shimuttno.

Haha! I like it.

If the chance arises to get some Dura ace goodies in there, perhaps a re-name to Sor-ace?

Riphraph - I forgot to mention the "posh" wheelset (summer use only) with Hope Tech. hubs and deep section Velocity rims.... Another end of line bargain from the bike shop.

"A work in progress" - Definately.

The whole mix-up aspect is definately part of the fun - especially the chance to throw in good quality parts as the opportunity arises. It is part of the learning process too. I'm certainly not bothered about scoring style points, though the bike looks good to me ;). The most important thing is a well maintained bike that fits properly. Hit those two goals and to me, it doesn't matter what I ride, though there is fun to be had from meddling with new parts

Thanks for the input folks,

Cheers,

Ed
