I'm building up a recumbent and I'm trying to avoid using a jackshaft. Does anyone make a chainring in the 70 tooth range?

You lost me at "recumbent".

Come on wanders, he's trying to build up the fastest Mup rig so he can drop all of those silly roadies on their conventional bicycles.

OK then. It looks like you're going to have to fabricate it youself like this guy (http://www.fleettrikes.com/tth8.htm).

For what it's worth, "I just jackshafted a roadie" will get you more recumbent cool points.

LOL. Those teeth look like they'd wreak some havoc on a chain. But maybe the diameter mitigates that.

GO BACK (http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=37) to where you belong!!! We don't need your kind here, and that chainring looks like it won't be very effective with the shape of the "teeth"

Pfft .... I use a 80 tooth ring for easy spinning during the winter.

I think you mean-

Bent's are so much faster than wedgies, you'll all learn once you get droped on the Mup by one of them. 'Bent's can turn a fat, bearded granola-eating college professor into a pro bike racer.

That's why I stay off of the MUP's and on the road, where the climbs are.

They were all clogging up the Metro Parks Sat.
Bents with jingle bells,dog pulling a trike,professors,etc.
Was there a convention here or is the circus in town?

Or, just use a 2 tooth rear cog.

I always enjoy a visit from our recumbulator friends so I will lend a hand to Foster from Florida.
BIG chain ring for you:
Find an old Western Auto outboard.
Remove the flywheel from top of motor.
Voila,a 100+ tooth ring.
You are now the fastest mechanical beach chair in God,s Waiting Room.

I've yet to see a Bent in the parks, maybe you should stay off of the Mup?

And we hate bents because they're the Rush Limbaugh of cycling, without the oxycontin addiction.

Paragon Machine works used to make some 60t chainrings. Maybe they could fabricate a 70t one for you.

Recumbent or not, the options are similar.

* Find a big ring: Not optimal because a front derailleur won't match the diameter of a 70T ring (although it'll work.)

* Schlumpf Speed Drive: direct and 1.65 overdrive built into the bottom bracket. It only allows a only a single chainring, so you'd have two effective chainrings, i.e. 44T/74T.

* SRAM 3x9: 0.73 underdrive, direct drive, and 1.37 overdrive. It can be used with a triple chainring, providing 81 gears. Needs to be built into a wheel.

You want huge gear ratios?

Check out this page: http://www.canosoarus.com/08LSRbicycle/LSR%20Bike02.htm

The bike at the top has a chainring whose diameter is larger than that of the cranks. The bike at the bottom has a double-reduction chainring system. Take your pick :)

Greenspeed does, and Hostel Shoppe sells 'em.

If you like, I can try to find an old HPV News article on machining your own at home.

Flying furniture could probaly help out, or Greenspeed.
Another option is to go with a Capreo rear hub = 9 tooth small sprocket :)

Greenspeed do their own chainrings, besides supplying TA. Scroll down a little on http://www.greenspeed.com.au/gsparts.html and you'll find 73T and 80T chainrings.
