Training & Nutrition - Low bone density

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I went to a local health fair Saturday to get a free flu shot. I biked up there, uphill all the way. The nurse asked me if I wanted a bone density test. The results were-1.9, which is below normal. I've read about cyclist having this problem, plus I'm taking Prilosec which I think blocks calcium absorption. Has anyone else had this problem and can it be reversed? I'm increasing my diary intake and starting a weight program during the winter months, but is that enough?
You should do weigh bearing exercise to help prevent osteoporosis. Walking, hiking, or running will all help.

Yea - running will help - so will calcium tablets with Vitamin D (needed for the absorption of calcium)

There are differences in Calsium supplements. This product http://www.algaecal.com/ claims it can actually grow bone. Any experience about it anyone?

Get a full table bone density (DEXA) test. The screenings can be inaccurate (mine was). Your insurance will probably pay for it if you tell them you flunked the screening.
