Winter Cycling - I'm trying to enjoy this while it lasts

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Today was one of those rare Minnesota March days that it was really cold, 15 on the way to work 1 on the way home. I was a bit reluctant to ride in this cold, but I did, and I'm sort of glad I did, cause I'll remember it in August when I'm drenched in sweat from a ride in the heat (of course in MN it's not the heat it's the humidity).
The weather is starting to rebound, and soon this forum will go untended for months until the snow flies, the temp drops and we start encouraging each other to keep riding, and share how we do it. There isn't a forum for "Summer riding," or "extreme weather riding." And I'm gonna miss posting about riding on the lakes, and black ice, and how to stay warm when the mercury drops below zero.
So, I'm already wanting to see winter end, just so we can have it start up again in 6 months.

Perhaps we need a "Wind cycling forum" :)

More March Madness! 3 inches of snow that turned to slush, then to ice. Ugh, I can't wait for spring to get over! I got home soaking wet, evidently snow doesn't understand the concept of fenders on a bike. Or I just don't have them on right, cause I was wet! Fortunately had zip lock baggies to store the cell and the GPS.

"Weather is starting to rebound"??? Not here.

Northeastern U.S.ers: How much snow did you get yesterday?

About 9 inches here.

SNOW?? What's that?

It is supposed to get up to 75F today, not a cloud in the sky. And here I am playing hooky from work! What to do, what to do?

Oh surrrrrrrre!!! Rub it in. Hmmm, I wonder if a snowball will make it to Texas?!? ;) Hey Naisme, as far as the slush/fender/wet thing, it just happens, it has nothing to do with how you have your fenders on.

Well, would I be less wet with fenders then without? Or is wet wet, and I should just be grateful the BB is holding out?

I feel sorry for people living in places without real seasons. By "real seasons," I mean that it has to get hot in the summer and there has to be significant snow in the winter. I wouldn't want to trudge through the snow twelve months a year, but most of my best biking experiences involve a fresh blanket of snow or a bike path coated with ice. Anyone stuck in Texas or SoCal just can't understand.

Hey naisme,

It would have been a great day to ride out here in Ohio. Mid 30's and the paved areas are all clear.

It's just a winter/spring thing, slush has a different consistancy then straight water so it just goes every where. But trust me, you're better off with fenders, and slush doesn't penetrate BB's like straight water.

I figured it out, it isn't the BB going, it's the pedals: a winter of riding, and a couple seasons of being on a fixed gear, the pedal bearings are giving up the ghost.
