Who froze his cornea? He was a musher on the Ididarod dog sled race. His goggles had become fogged, or iced and in the cold his cornea had frozen or gotten frostbit.
It has me really rethinking some of the dangers I faced this winter riding in the sub-zero temps. I haven't even given that any thought, freezing my eyes. I was more worried about the cold taking an toe or a finger, and then I came home in the -4 and was mildly hypothermic, and took that serious.
I wear eye protection on the road, sunglasses in the day, or amber lens on cloudy, and clear at night. I've had my corena scratched by dust and sand from the road, and I'd rather scratch a pair of Oakleys, than have that happen again. It was riding today that had me thinking about it. The wind was whipping up something fierce, and had my eyes watering. *My glasses, while good, don't really keep out the wind when it's gusting at 20mph. I worried about the wind freezing my tears, and not being able to see, and crashing or getting hit while I struggled to regain my sight. It didn't happen, but I'd hate to give up my winter cycling, and cycling in general because I allowed my eyes to freeze.
