General Cycling Discussion - Need to supersize my cycling shoes

I bought my road bike a little over a year ago, and I'm absolutely loving it. I weigh less now than I did on my wedding day 15 years ago. It's awesome. I'm ready to make the jump from toeclips to clipless pedals and appropriate cycling shoes. However, I've got larger than average feet. I just got back from my bike store, and they only carry up to size 48. When I wear a 48, my toes are just touching the end of the shoe. I think I really need a 50, but who makes them? The only brand at Performance that went up to 50 was Sidi, but I just don't want to spend $270 dollars for them. I'd be a lot more comfortable in the $100 - $150 range. Does such a shoe exist?

A month ago I got a pair of size 50 at their outlet store,
paid $10 for them. I also have a pair of Sidi's- size 50

Performance doesn't stock the lower priced Sidis. Check out the Zeta (road) or Bullet2 (MTB or touring). FWIW, I find the Zeta and the Bullet to be great shoes at a reasonable price. They are made in a size 50 but they may be hard to find in that size.

w00t! Thanks, gang. I just found a pair of Sidi Zetas in size 50 for $140, and they should be coming this week. Glad to hear someone with experience with Zetas giving a good recommendation!

An avid cyclist once told me, when buying bike shoes, get them 1/2 size larger than usual. Your feet will thank you later in the day.

I purchased my sidis the same size as my normal shoes. The fact that they tend to run narrow combined with the above gem results in my toenails bruising on long rides. My left big toe nail is about read to fall off. Oh joy.

Ugh. I hope these fit then. I had to order mail-order. But I can always return them if they don't fit.
