Fifty Plus (50+) - Reading "Bicycling" -- so you don't have to (Nov.'08)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

By popular demand. I'm not the chap who started this tradition, but when I got home the magazine was waiting for me and I had to go to the bathroom...

Anyway:
--if you have lots of money you can buy a really nice bike.
--if you spend even more money you can get it properly fitted.
--riding can be addictive.
--people who ride bikes turn out to be better people.
--there's a long article about some chick named Heidi. I don't read stuff like that.
--Katya Meyers is smoking hot.

I think that hits the high points. Feel free to add.

Nice try, but it lacked the bite of the earlier digests. It needs more disparaging remarks.

Is there a magazine for people that want to read about affordable bikes, that may include some articles an normal people doing local group rides and maybe even mention some of us that do not seek trophies and money but ride because we enjoy it?

For those who enjoy touring, I recommend Adventure Cyclist, which comes with membership in Adventure Cycling Association. The feature articles in the September / October issue are:

- a father and son as they cycle on six continents
- an American couple's tour through Columbia
- fundraising rides

Is it just me, or do they have the exact same headline every month, something along the lines of "Get Lean Now!" or some such thing?

What!?? Did they change their format? What happened to:
--ride faster, stronger, longer -- even into your 40s
--eat right, lose weight
--the latest expensive parts you need
--the latest expensive clothes you need
--the latest expensive SUV you need
--bicycling trips you can't afford (loser!)

See pages 68 through 78 of the current issue. A nice story about a group of teenagers who did a cross-country tour in 1978 and what they are all doing now. Not a racer in the bunch.

On page 105, the "what bike should I buy?" feature suggests a $560 Kona Fire Mountain for the information seeker.

Maybe a less sarcastic and entertaining spin, but more accurate.

Lots of people would read such a magazine. Not many would advertise in it, at least for the kind of $$ a decent national magazine needs to charge for an ad. There's a reason the typical bike reviewed in Bicycling costs $3,600.

Sincerely,

your neighborhood bicycling journalist (who has been researching just such an endeavor)

Hot? I'd like to say...

I love these Bicycling synopsis threads (and I really enjoy Da Link's hyoomuh)
I still buy the rag, though; every month. I've seen worse.

But, yeah, big thumbs up for Road Bike Action or whatever Bob Roll calls his rag.
I've only bought two issues so far but my life has a place for this magazine. Oh yes.

"Long" used to mean two pages, not counting the ads that crowded the corners. Are the editors getting over their ADHD yet?

Does anyone remember a small magazine called bike tech? I believe it was put out by the bicycling crowd back in the 80s? I really miss that kind of stuff. I can do without the current bicycling "sound bites meet cartoons" theme.

Staring at the tile pattern on the floor wasn't more interesting? Well, okay, I've done that once or twice myself...[/quote]

Anyway:

BTDT

--if you spend even more money you can get it properly fitted.

Have not BTDT

--riding can be addictive.

Well, um...yeah

--people who ride bikes turn out to be better people.

Well, um...could we see the raw data?

--there's a long article about some chick named Heidi. I don't read stuff like that.

Me neither...I'm still mad about missing the end of the football game.

--Katya Meyers is smoking hot.

I'll see your Katya Meyers and raise you a Liz Hatch.

I think that hits the high points. Feel free to add.

I think, in all honesty, that the serious question about Bicycling is...why is the rider on the cover always out of the saddle? I mean, evey freaking cover the rider is out of the saddle. Do these guys know that most riders actually sit on the saddle 98% of the time? Do they ride bikes, even?

Nope its just you. The headline is more like GET*******NOW where the *'s represent the fitness rage of the day, such as ripped abs, lean, fast, blah blah blah.

I get this rag every month. My subscription is renewed when I renew my LAB membership. The November issue came last week and I've only glanced at it. I'm up to page 56. I guess I'll see what the "This is your saddle" article is about later today.
Really liked the Schwinn Paramount lugs pictured on page 34. :thumb:
Am I the only one NOT interested in the Biketown articles each month?
Who wants to rate the car ads?

This might be interesting. (http://www.dirtragmag.com/blogarific/dirt-rag-launches-new-title-bicycle-times/)

"The staff of Dirt Rag Magazine is proud to announce the start of a new venture, called Bicycle Times. This new magazine will focus on the pavement side of the bicycle experience—from commuting, to touring, to riding with family, to pedaling around for the heck of it."

Many of you have no interest in MTBs, so you may not know what a great magazine Dirt Rag is.
