i have a nice schwinn world sport om converting to a single speed and i want some decent brakes for it. pretty much every new brakeset i can find is all recessed bolts for the mounting hardware. recessed wont work with old 80's steel i dont think...can they be converted or is the recessed nut part of the axle? what are some newer brakes made without the recessed nut?

It's pretty easy to drill out the backhole in the fork to accommodate the recessed nut.

really, and it will fit well without slipping at all? have you done it? and it will work for the back brake also? i might go home and try it right now.

I've done it. It was per the recommendation of on of the BF forum members.

Two things I wish I did though...

Lube the bit, and wear close toed shoes. When drill bits bite on steel, it hurts...a lot.

But yah, it works.

Someone else just wrote about nutted brakes that are around still too.

I've done it and it works fine. Use the front brake for the back, which should fit fine with a regular nut. Then drill the fork and use a long recessed nut (bike shop wil sell you one) with the rear brake. It works like a dream.
