Introductions - Tired of Road rage and bad Drivers

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi everyone, new here. I am 23, mother to be (December 6!).

I am so tired of being on the road with bad drivers and all the road rage (which I am also guilty of unfortunately). It is really taking a negative effect on my attitude. Not to mention, getting into an accident when it was the other driver's fault and totally getting screwed by the insurance company.

Anyways, I really want to get into cycling more. Right now, I own a Pink Roxie Schwin (which is only a leisure bike). I do plan on getting another bike in the future, one that is built for commuting. Of course this won't be until after I have my little girl.

Until then, I look forward to making friends and learning more about cycling ^_^

First of all let me send a condratulations on your soon-to-be new arrival. My wife and I had our first when we were 23 and here we are 12 years later with a total of four.

There is no shortage of bad drivers in the world and it doesn't help that luxury cars and oversized SUVs are no longer equipped with turn signals. I admire you for wanted to get more into cycling; especially commuting. I wish I could do the same, but being currently unemployed, I have nowhere to commute to.

You don't experience road rage directed at you while cycling? I get some, but it depends mostly on where I ride but it isn't nearly as bad as what I get when I am behind the wheel.

Well I haven't cycled nearly enough to experience any, but I know I am going to encounter it. There are many angry drivers in my area, it being so close to Chicago and all...

I experienced road-sorry! today: I was rolling along on a side street and came to an intersection. I had no Stop sign, the cross street did. A lady of probably about 55 was at the Stop sign. We made eye contact, and then... she started to go! Then all of a sudden she realized that, yes, a bicycle is a vehicle too, and worthy of the right-of-way. She stopped again, looked very sheepish and mouthed "Ï'M SORRY!" to me. I gave her a big grin and a wave back at her and went on my merry way. Just before I looked away from her, I could see she caught my grin because she had one of her own.

Yeah, there are some jerks out there, but there are lots of nice people too.

And good on you for hanging around while you're in limbo, bicycle-wise. You will be an expert by the time the baby comes!

i live in historic east nashville, tn and ride about three miles each way to work. travelling at rush hour on a bike is a little scary but also very satisfying (i love being in the bike lane and passing people in line at a stop light)! usually people are really nice, sometimes waiting at a stop sign when i kinda wish they would have gone ahead (the pressure is on!) or stopping when they don't have to in order to let a biker turn, etc. but the other day i actually had a guy cuss me out at a four way stop! i was appalled! the kicker was that he had a "parks and environment" specialty plate.:innocent:

hi
my name is eric, i'm a new bike forum member...i just wanted to add, that i believe one of the best ways to make cycling safer, is to ride your bicycle with traffic, following the rules of the road. when drivers see cyclists, they must think "oh, i better be careful, there are people riding bikes in traffic"; most sensible folks will slow down and be more alert, the more cyclists they see. (at and maybe start riding a bike!) this is more true when 'vehicular cycling' than the kamikaze style that many kids ride around my town, but we're working on that.

Most operators of vehicles have no more idea what they are doing than a 2 year old with a 45ACP, most don't even know the law, I swear, Post Toasties must come with a free drivers license.

You can be one of the responsible ones then! Seriously, learning to ride safely in the road is important. Sidewalks may look safer, but they are actually more dangerous.

Check out the Utility Cycling forum--you can probably pick up some good tips in there.

Welcome to BikeForums, and don't hesitate to send me a PM if you have any questions!
