I am coming (from the Bay Area) to visit the in-laws this weekend. They are planning to go apple picking in Oak Glen. I'd love to join them AND get a ride in!

Here is the basic route (per Google Maps): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=1352+Prospect+Drive,+Redlands,+CA+92373+(Prospect+Park)&daddr=oak+glen,+ca&hl=en&geocode=CRenj2z4ejU5FR1hBwId0iEE-SHJUO__bO5HuA%3B&mra=pe&mrcr=0&dirflg=h&sll=34.043776,-117.058469&sspn=0.277084,0.439453&ie=UTF8&ll=34.057211,-117.05864&spn=0.277039,0.439453&z=11

EDIT: This route looks like it would probably be better and quieter: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=1352+Prospect+Drive,+Redlands,+CA+92373+(Prospect+Park)&daddr=La+Solana+Dr+to:34.029545,-117.076578+to:oak+glen,+ca&hl=en&geocode=FR1hBwId0iEE-SHJUO__bO5HuA%3BFbQuBwIdtrUE-Q%3B%3B&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=14&via=1,2&dirflg=h&sll=34.029047,-117.068081&sspn=0.034642,0.054932&ie=UTF8&ll=34.030896,-117.08559&spn=0.069282,0.109863&z=13

It looks like it's about 18 miles (closer to 15 or 16 for the second route), but I just don't know enough about the roads in this area to know if it would be a safe and pleasant ride. Since it parallels the freeway, I would think that traffic wouldn't be too bad. Would it make a difference if I were doing it on a weekday versus a Saturday?

I would appreciate any advice. I also want to ride up Onyx one of these days, but that looks like more of an undertaking than I have time for!

Thanks!

If you don't have time to go up Onyx, be sure to go up Damnation Alley and Forrest Falls after OG. That's one pleasant ride!:thumb:

That's the one, but forrest falls continues up beyond the fork where your red line stops (veer right). Still about 5 miles up to FF.

I was lucky. I rode with a group of guys that said OG was the tough part and FF was easy. So I pushed hard on OG and Damnation Alley. Almost died up FF 22% with the double.:D

Don't trust everyone!:p

Its rideable, but Lugonia has alot of traffic, you can use San Bernardino instead part way. The second route is definately better and one my co worker rides after work.

You'll love OG. I went up there last Saturday and you're lucky you weren't going that day. It was in the 50s and got pretty wet up there. Don't forget to get an apple pie. They pack those fresh pies with practically quarter cut apples and after baking they stand about 6 inches high. Amazing stuff.

Looks like a good ride for me!

Any particular route recommendations? Should I take the main roads? Stay north of I-10 or cut south?

Thanks in advance.

Both routes are good.

For the first route, try the following:

After turning onto Ford,
Turn Right on E. Citrus Ave.
Left on Crafton Ave.
Right on Mill Creek/Hwy 38

For the second route, if you want less traffic try the following changes.

After making the right on Outer Hwy 10,
Turn left on 16th St.
Turn right on Avenue E
Turn left on Bryant St
Turn right on Oak Glen

This will take you to Stater Brothers, the last rest stop before the serious climbing up Oak Glen

Good luck.

From Redlands you can take San Timoteo straight into Beaumont where it becomes Oak Valley Pkwy. A couple of miles further it comes to Beaumont Ave. at the light. Go Left there and you are on the road to Oak Glen the same way the Breathless Agony goes. The Shell Station is the last stop for food and water till you finish the Oak Glen climb.

Thanks for the tips. I took the 16th St. turn and then took E over to Oak Glen. It was a nice (and fairly tough) climb, but even in the middle of the day on a weekday, there was quite a lot of high-speed traffic. It made me realize that I am lucky to have so many great rides close by in the Bay Area. If any of you SoCal folks make it up here and need route recommendations, let me know (or post in the NorCal forum).

Here is my MB route and other info if anyone is curious: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/6964399
