View Full Version : Why you love cycling

I love cycling because:

When the only sound I hear is the whir of the tires on the road because I am going exactly the same speed as the wine, I love cycling.

When I realized that the Tae Kwon Do injury I sustained 4 years ago has been rehabbed by riding my bike, I love cycling.

When I get just as stoked by my old road bike, my new hybrid, and my classic English 3-speed roadster, I love cycling.

When it is just me and the mechanical wonder under me, I love cycling.

The self loathing is awesome. Its numbs my brain away from all the other things that are going on.

Because when I am on a bike nothing matters... except oncoming buses.

I do it to meet cheap drugged women.

Well that and the zen like feeling of being one with the bike, in tune with the road, the drivetrain and my own being all at once.

Riding at night is cool, but you have to watch the road more if you are riding hard. For slower rides, nothing beats riding solo at night, just cycling along in your sphere of solitude.

I also enjoy the satisfaction of riding a machine that I have rebuilt from top to bottom, know every nut and bolt on it, and being able to fix most things on it that break or make a noise.

I love cycling because I can look at hot men in lycra shorts with sculpted shaved legs.

It also gets me to work so I don't have to pay for gas, and I can pretty much eat what I want.

I love cranking at 25 mph for miles. Knowing that the only powerplant is me. I love tucking in at 60 mph and feeling like I'm gonna die at any minute. i love pulling some stupid awesome trick to get myself over a big obstacle. I love feeling the burn and the pain and getting home and crashing.

Wait, do I need to start shaving my legs?

Note to self... shave the sculpted legs.

Oooh, good thread!

When I smell the wet eucalyptus trees and rotting vegetation of the deciduous trees, I love cycling.

When a bald eagle circles over me, close enough for me to count his wing feathers, I love cycling.

When I feel like I'm ten years old again, I love cycling.

When I come home from an inspiring, challenging ride, feeling like all's right with the world, I love cycling.

I could go on, but the bottom line is, I love cycling!

Wow... some of you said what I wanted to say, only better:

"Because when I am on a bike nothing matters..."

"Well that and the zen like feeling of being one with the bike, in tune with the road, the drivetrain and my own being all at once.

...nothing beats riding solo at night, just cycling along in your sphere of solitude."

"Knowing that the only powerplant is me."

"When I feel like I'm ten years old again, I love cycling."

And no, I'm not shaving my legs... OR wearing lycra.

It's my chance to leave some worries and cares at home for a bit. The mind seems to clear itself of these things for an hour or two on the road.

it’s the pixie dust, it also helps you fly......if you believe it will :)

I knew I remembered responding to this question not too long ago

A third of the way up a long climb a big Monarch butterfly lands on my arm and rides to the top with me.

Feeling the contours of a rural road.

Seeing the same very old man riding every morning on my way to work and hoping to still be riding at his age.

No need to ever stop for gas.

The satisfaction of doing a good, dirty and complete overhaul.

Traveling with stillness on a rural road, sun coming up, those first warm rays of the sun.

The quiet magic of riding with a silent drivetrain on a full moon evening

Fall rides in woods that look like stained-glass windows.

Allows me to turn life’s friction into momentum.

Yes... it has been the fixed gear riding that has given my the calves of steel.

And with apologies to the ladies... I am not saving these gams for anyone

:) Because it makes me feel good! :)

Plus it gives me something to talk about when things are difficult. Flat tires, getting lost, dealing with peds and motorists...all part of the big adventure.

Good pain...freedom...peace...the wind hitting me in the face...riding in the rain...hucking logs...tucking into a berm...watching wildlife...looking up at the sky when in a forest on some clean singletrack...the whir of a clean drivetrain...catharsis...the scent of the forest...

Balancing. That's my current joy. Just knowing that I'm in equilibrium when I'm on the road. Realizing that it's actually difficult for some people, but I can still do it comfortably and easily on a number of different bikes at over 40 years of age. Recently test riding a comfort bike where I could pogo around was also a kick. The whole thing is just a joy to me.

Those things, plus singing "Raindrops keep falling on my head..." just like in Butch Cassidy, while a few raindrops fell on my head. :)

I love the fact that I can pass people in cars stuck in traffic. I love that I can go 35 mph under my own power (for a few hundred yards anyway). I love that it doesn't require gas or diesel to go places. I love being outdoors. I love the smell of fresh cut grass during the spring and the smell right after a good rain shower. I love being almost 42 yrs old and being in better shape than a lot of people half my age. and I'm sure there's more reasons.
