I've seen a cartridge headset at velo orange with a split crown race. (see here (http://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2008/09/grand-cru-sealed-bearing-headsets.html#links))

From what I read in the comments, I realized it's technically not a race since the bearings roll within the cartridge.

I then guess that the race (Chris King calls it a base plate) is more or less secure on the crown and could move a bit on the crown. I'm wondering if it's ok to have a loose race on a cartridge headset, say like a spacer between the stem and the upper cup.

I don't think the "race" will move on the fork crown. Even though it may be split, it should be angled where the lower bearing sits which will force the "race" tight against the crown under pressure of the bearing preload.

Consider also that there should be very little torque against the "race" unless the lower headset bearing is binding.

Thanks that's what I though. A bit of friction between the race and the crown is sufficient, the vertical preload will take care of the rest.

FSA also makes cartridge bearing headsets with split crown "races" and they work just fine. Easy to install and no downside.

That would have saved me $5 that I paid the LBS to pound my race in...
