The other evening Bobke and Paul were talking about a rider staying in the gutter. Is it just another way of saying "staying in the pack?"

Reading Scott Sunderland's Diary entries makes one want to read something into just about every word these guy's say. For example, today he talked about taking a squize at the scenery at the top of a climb. Wha...? I guess he meant taking a look at the view.

But in the gutter is just that. In the gutter, which is normally the part of the road next to the curb, is where you might go to pass when no one wants to give way in the pack or where you might ride if the road is cobbled. It's kind of a desperate place to ride.

It's not where these rider's minds are when they think about what they'd rather be doing when it's snowing and -2 deg. :D

To expound on what Don said, if you watch Paris-Roubaix
there are stretches where there appears to be a small
(6 - 12 inches) concrete skirt around the pave for water
to run off. I think that is the gutter they are talking about. Not always a bad place to be when the pave is
really chopped up.

Notice a rider rides on the gutter when they attack on the Champs Ellyses.

How can anyone one ride on cobbles? I find spare teeth rolling around my mouth when I hit a manhole, and a smooth one at that.

Gutter I belive could be of old english is basically a drain for water. Sometimes a gutter is usually very deep, hence where I live if you are in the gutter you are really down and out. I guess it could have two meanings here.
