General Cycling Discussion - Road bike stems

I'm building my own bicycle, using a Surly Pacer frame and Campy parts (for the most part). As you probably know, the frame is steel (good old steel!)

That gives it, I feel, nicer lines than carbon, aluminum or ti frames. Plus, it has nice lug work! Anyway, since I'm finding that I'm enjoying the looks of a bicycle with this quality, I wanted to go one step further. I think, aesthetically, handlebar stems of today suck. Oh, back to the days of Cinelli stems that were smooth, sleek and sexy!

I'm wondering if the new Pacer frame can take this type of stem; if so, are there any stems out there that can had? (Other than taking the Cinelli off my 1976 Mosemann.

If you mean new/nice 1" stems/goosenecks for a threaded headset? Not really. They are quite rare. I can think of Nitto (Look at Harris Cycle in Newton, Mass), or Deda. Other than that - it's old-new stock. Or used. eBay etc. Some shops. Google helps. You could contract a custom job. But a Cinelli stem you have? Clean it up!

I have a Cinelli stem with a Campion Del Mundi handlebar attached that I'd let go for a pretty good deal. The bar is even pre taped with Cinelli cork but no brake levers. As previously mentioned, this is real pretty stuff but it won't work with anything that I've got. PM me if you're interested.

The stem has a 130mm reach and the bar is 45mm ctc so they're pretty big. They're the old Cinelli size that has a clamp diameter a skosh bigger than anything else so they pretty much have to go together.

The real trick to using a quil stem on your Pacer has to do with the fork. You need a 1" threaded fork and headset.

Nitto stems are really a wonder to behold and the finish would set off your machine.

Sorry RGMW but the Surly Pacer only takes 1 1/8" threadless stems. The nice looking stems you are talking about are for 1" threaded only.

Also, who told you the Surly Pacer was lugged? I believe the only thing lugged on any Surly might be the fork, the rest is welded.

Rare!? You mean rare in that you just have to order it off the internet? I know of a couple dozen places you can get them and they have plenty in stock and they are brand new.
