Bicycle Mechanics - Two questions about silicone lubs.

Suspect I might overlube..I normally use a dry silicone base lubricant for my drive chain.. Two questions..I have been told by mechanics who use dry lubes you have to lube more often..It does not last as long...So how often should you lube. Since I am not sure how often to lube with dry lube, I lube probably every second ride. My rides are rarely under 50 miles.
I find even using clean dry lubes, my drive chains gets pretty dirty well within a month's time...I probably ride at least 400 miles a month...If not closer to 600.
That dirt. Sign of over lubing. How often do you apply clean lubes.
Also, some riders tell me..Silicone based lubes are as bad as oil based lubes. Can't get off the waxy build up..?

If the amount of times you used the word lube in the post has a bearing- yes, you use it too much! :D

Heah..I am up doing an all nighter on midnight shift.. Should have done a thread preview.
The question..Mechanic says dry lubricants don't last. I apply White Lightning probably at least every one hundred miles of riding. After a month the chain still looks pretty gritty. Not sure, how often do you apply dry lubricants.?
Some riders say they don't like the waxy build up. Think the waxy build up is as bad as the dark goo you see on oily lubricants.?

I really don't know, but I was wondering about graphite dry lubricants- are they of use on bikes rather than silicone?
I never tried the silicone lubes but the remark about dry lubes don't last is true...but wet lubes don't last either!!
All I can tell you is I have tried all the various dry wax lubes and found them all to be junk. You apply the stuff, ride 50 miles and the chain would start making noise. Chain noise is not a good thing-that means wear is happening at an accelerated pace. The best lube I have used is Tri-Flow which I've used for about 20 years (before trying the wax crap because I heard they were better), and the stuff I use now which is Finish Line Teflon Plus, both of these would last about 500 miles before the chain got dirty enough to clean but during that time I never heard a peep from the chain. I also tried some stuff called Speed Skate Lube which was also very good but I do not like sprays. There are other very good lubes out there that I have not tried yet, such as Pro Link Gold, Phil Wood Tenacious Oil and some others.

My Klein owners manual recommends 'Pro Link.' Most often I use White Lightning.. The labels call them something like 'self cleaning.'
I find as one mentioned after about 500 miles the drive train still looks pretty icky. Time for a cleaning even the the dry lube. So since we are not sure how long dry lubricants last, once every 100 miles is not excessive?

The silicone based dry lubes, like White Lightning are a synthetic wax in a solution that evaporates. The gunk is a combination of dirt and waxy buildup. Traditional wet lubes like Phil Wood Tenacious Oil attract dirt to the wet surface. I prefer dry teflon based lubes like Finish Line Dry Formula. They penetrate the links like a wet lube, but then the wet carrier evaporates, leaving a dry film of PTFE (teflon) behind. The chain only needs to have enough lube on it to feel slick, without being gunked up. A quick swipe of the fingers will tell you if you need more lube or a cleaning.

Demon... I usually wipe the chain dry with a cloth after each lubing..Think that gets the excess off. I have been on rides, 50 miles out and the chain is noisy; do not want that to happen.
