I am trying to come up with a tour route in Nebraska. Is anyone familiar with highway 91? I am hoping that someone on here knows what type of road highway 91 is and if there is a paved shoulder or if biking this highway would be a bad idea.

Here is the route that I have come up with so far. I have already ridden the route to Fremont.

If anyone has a different route to recommend, let me know.

I'd ride that in a heartbeat. Very pretty through most of that. There are time the road is busy, but not bad. Not really any shoulder that I remember, but since the road isn't that busy.

Do you know how hilly it is? I'm not sure if I want to tackle this tour on a hybrid or a road bike yet. If it's fairly flat, I am leaning towards the hybrid. Since the route is dotted with little towns, I plan to stay in hotels along the way. I'll probably end up doing 1/2 the tour up to Howells or Clarkson (if they have a hotel) and head back.

3100 feet of climb in 142 miles. That's flat. Ride it on whatever bike you like the most.

Rolling hills like most of eastern NE. Not a lot of traffic in early June when I went on a motorcycle trip to Scottsbluff. However, with harvest season in full swing right now, there is probably a lot more truck traffic. I don't recall Howells having a motel. Most of the towns are fairly small.

I have altered my route....highway 92 is not a good idea past Fremont according to a biking map. I came up with another tour that had favorable roads for biking. Also at the end of the tour I can take a train back to Omaha.
