Can anyone recommend relatively safe bike parking near Port Authority, including sidewalk racks?

Better luck on 8th Ave vs 9th - 9th is a bit shady.

try an find a spot around Manhattan plaza, I think they have security walk the block.
they did when I got drunk and had a guard ask me to leave the area on 43rd street.
I'd look for racks in front of their health club or entrances.
I've seen hell's kitchen go from good to bad and now it's going back to bad.
junkies and condoms are returning, well the old junkies were always there.

tough as it is to find spots, try to find a few different ones, and don't leave the bike in the same exact spot every day...that's making it too easy for thieves.

Thanks for the input, all. You confirmed my suspicions. Fortunately I don't need to park there everyday, and only for an hour, hour-thirty at a time. I've been donating blood there for years (yeah, there's plenty of jokes that could come from that--I'm talking about NY Blood Services in the South Wing) because it's handy to my subway line, but I'm pretty sure I could finish my ride home after a donation and want to start doing it that way. With that in mind I did a little recon last night and checked a couple of their other locations (67th btwn 1st & 2nd, 53rd & Lex) for better parking opportunities. The 67th St spot might be okay, 53rd has a lot of foot traffic but no real place to lock the bike. Tonight I'll scope out their mid- and downtown locations: 200 Park Ave (MetLife) and One New York Plaza.

Metro bikes has a rack on the street on 47 and 9th, right in front of the shop so you have them watching it for you. 10am to 6pm. Most of the area in Hell's Kitchen has racks, one of the more bike friendly hoods.
