I am finishing a new build and am curious on the necessity of a chainstay protector on a steel bike. It's painted, probably powercoat from the factory.
Thoughts? Pros/Cons either way?
Let me know...I want to ride this beast!
Thanks,
CM

If you ever get chainsuck, you'll trash your paint job. I would certainly do it.

Thanks Lorri. I just put some electrical tape on until I can find a clear solution.

I used Benotto bar tape on my trusty old Fisher MTB. 20 years later it's still there! I wasn't sure you could still get the stuff, but a quick Google turned up this: https://store.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?SessionID=BDC264A703EF7838E54CFD3AF08B7451&SoftReset=True&CS=icycles&StoreType=BtoC&ProductID=353&Target=direct_checkout.asp
Not sure if gray or white will work with your frame color though...

I've used a 3M product called "Bonk!" on a previous bike. It was my MTB so I put it on the underside of the downtube and on the chainstays. Goes on like window film, using soapy water and a squeegee.
For just the chainstay, it might be a little pricey. Here's one place you can find it. (http://www.trisports.com/bopaprfi.html)

You can also use an old inner tube. Wrap it and zip tie the end off. Like so...
