Any other crossword puzzle nerds in foo? What's a good free online puzzle source? boatloadpuzzles.com is free but too easy and repeats too many words.

I never much got in to crossword puzzles, but my girlfriend loves them and has started getting me more and more in to them lately. She has a bunch of small books of them she got somewhere (should last a year at least). They are all fairly easy which is good because I'm not that great at them.

The person who maintains the site, Will Johnston, is quite a good crossword constructor himself. Most of these are in AcrossLite format, for which you'll need this (free) software:

You can do them on the computer, or you can print them out. (I prefer printing them.)

I also have a subscription to the New York Times crossword puzzle, which is the gold standard of crossword puzzles, though the New York Sun is not far behind. (The New York Sun puzzles are free by the way, accessible through the site I listed above.)

I'm so addicted to those things. I hate it when I get almost a whole one done and then I can't figure out the last 2 or 3 words.

I get the free ones in daily papers and save them when I can't do them (how cheap is that!) I keep 'em in a folder at work and take with me when i go eat lunch...in a couple of weeks am flying to Florida and It'll be with me to help while away boredom...

best part - each puzzle has the answers the following day, so if I am stumped on the last word or two, I just cheat:innocent:

We were supposed to go see Wordplay while on a vaca but we chose that Prarie Home Companion flick instead...I got a kidney stone the next morning. I blame Garrison Keillor.

:D Love crossword puzzles. The newspaper offerings (one Democrat&Cronicle and another from the New York Times) seem to start on a more easier version on Monday - leading into a harder one(s) on Friday's edition with Saturday and Sunday being quite the hard thing. When I was bartending years ago - I had some people who would come in on the weekends and we'd all compare how quick we completed the puzzles on each day -- with this one guy (no longer with us) who zipped through Monday through Sunday like butter .... smart guy!!

Actually I prefer the "Variety" type of puzzle magazines and usually have about 4 magazines working (or more) at one time - as I refuse to cheat and look up the answer and so when I get bored I look through my older "books" and lo and behold - I have one of the answers ....

When they become rather "ragtag" etc, well, then I retire them. Oh yeah - and I use pen in them, no pencil.

:D I actually use them as an almost "brain stimulant" cause I believe it's a thinking tool, as well as a fun outlet.
