I have a stainless mess kit but I only carry the frying pan to save weight. I'm thinking about buying a cheap aluminum mess kit so I have more options on cooking. Doe's aluminum hold up well on a unleaded stove? They seem kind of thin to me. Any bad taste from the aluminum?
Alu works ok. Of course, you can get a titanium mess kit now :D

aluminum works, but has a tendency to burn things due to uneven heating issues. at least i've found this to be true w/ every set of alum's i've ever used. i'd rather have a good cooking set and try and save weight elsewhere, like in the tent, but that's just me....
wait a min... this is me talking... what am i saying... save weight! get real i pack the kitchen sink AND the bathroom ta boot! those portable showers are really neat! just need to make sure your really in the sticks... but works to wash your hair if your not.
*wanders off shaking head and mumbling...*

If you get aluminium, get one with a non-stick coating like MSR Blacklite. I prefer it to stainless steel in every aspect except for the fragility of the coating.

Go with titanium! You can get a three piece set from campmor.com for $40.00

Thanks, I kind of like the Snow Peak Trek 700 Titanium Cookset for $30. Bigger pot for boiling water and such. Most of the kits I found on a search were outlandish!

I head down to the local walmart and buy a small nonstick fry pan. I cut the handle off completely, you don't need it. A couple of small plates, one bowl, and a cup (i buy them at a salvation army store, then give them back at the end of my tour) and you are all set.
