a breakup is like a death. someone you valued is no longer there, you've lost an emotional resource. you'll go through waves of grief, but eventually they'll get less severe, and less frequent.

The thing is that maybe you need to change gears. Instead of avoiding thinking about her, modify the way you think about her.
Think about her in a way that is productive for you, and who knows, maybe some day, when the time is right, if you are meant to be with her, things will come together in a way that will allow it. And if not, then life goes on. Think about her as an ex, and how you had good times. You will either develop a feeling of nostalgia which is OK, or detachment which is also OK.
But then again from another angle, perhaps you are not done with the grieving process. You know, the whole denial, acceptance, anger, sadness... Maybe you need to find ways to deal with, or express your emotions so that you can let go.
But, I think at some level you do...
