Advocacy & Safety - Reflective Tape

I know this has probably been posted/asked about a million times, but I'm too sick and too lazy to search. I know 3m makes a good one, but I couldn't find it.

All I need is a reasonably priced roll, or two, of reflective tape (white, black or silver) so I can wrap my winter bomber bike in it. I hate having reflectors on it, but I don't want to repaint the bike.

If you know of one, please include a place you have seen or purchased it from.

I see that you live in Nebraska so I'm not sure how many boating supply stores you have around there, but if you have a West Marine store in your area, they carry the 3m stuff. They also sell it online.

Just a note here. If you are interested in reflective tape for clothing also look at the silver SOLAS grade tape stick on. I use that on a lot of marine gear. It works very well and is easily shaped and sticks well to hard surfaces.

I saw black reflective tape at performance a few days ago.

and I use it all over my rear racks, cranks and my fenders. But, just last night, my wife passed me in her car and said the things that were really shining were my Nathan leg bands (they move up and down) and triangle, and my Planet Bike blinkie (the one with the retina burning strobe) attached to my helmet adjustment strap. She said she could see the reflective tape and my LED armband, but they didn't work nearly as well as the other stuff.

Here's another option. They make all sorts of reflective stuff. If you can find an industrial supply type place to get the 3m tape though, it'll probably be cheaper.

I get 8.5x11" sheets of 3m reflective tape in red, orange and white colours. Then I cut 8.5" long x 1" wide strips out of them and tape them to my rims before I build them up. Three strips per rim of each colour. From behind, you see a mad spinning array of colours since the rims are the fastest moving parts of a bike. :)

I also do tape between the spokes, which also gets me a bit of side reflectivity with semi-aero rims. Just do half the wheel so you get the motion / strobe effect.

Here is a shot of my bike covered in tape from identi-tape.com. The frame and rack are black and covered in black reflective tape, the rest (rims, cranks) is silver tape. Just to give you an idea in the difference in reflectivity between the black and silver tape. This is my dorky christmas tree setup, but I don't normally ride with all of this at the same time. :)

I have used this one.
It is 10 Times More reflective.
It is stiff, and I have used super glue to hold the edges down.

Thanks - will order that. Is it possible to put it around curved surfaces easily?

It doesn't like curves. You can get DOT high intensity tape at Lowe's or auto parts stores that is much thinner and looks 95%+ as effective as the 3M stuff to my eyes. It works great, comes off somewhat easy if you change your mind about an area and one $10 pack will do a pretty good job of making a bike visible.

Would this be it? They have not mentioned the thickness. I live outside the US and have to order this stuff without being able to see it so any help is appreciated.
