Northern California - New to SF... group rides?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm looking to participate in some group rides in the SF area. I've never been on a group ride before, so I'm looking preferably for a group who is open to newbies and willing to show me the ropes. I can keep up...that's not a problem. Anyone know of any or participate in/lead any rides like this?

Any (ok most... ;) ) of the rides hosted by any of the Bike Forums will be great for a newbie.
There is also Alto Velo and Penn Velo in the Peninsula, for your more racer-type group rides. However, they both offer group rides where everyone is welcome.
Sarting at the GGB, there is the "Roasters" ride that goes up to Marin. This is a fast paced ride.
I would say start with a BF led ride, and then try out one of those rides.

If you really want a crazy dose of BF'r Mayhem...there's been some talk goin round about Halloween, the same night as "Critical Mass"
I think I'm going to join in on that myself...
The following weekend is The "Foxey Fall" in Davis, but I'm sure every weekend will be chockfull of BF rides.

I'm not one to typically ride at Critical Mass, but I'm so curious to know what's going to happen with a CM on Halloween... The possibilities are just endless. If i'm not scheduled to work that night, I may have to check it out myself. Perhaps we can get a small group of Nor Cal BFers to ride together that night? I don't know about you guys, but I don't feel like dealing with some of the crazy people out there by myself.

If I can delay taking the kids trick-or-treating for a couple of hours, I'd like to see the Halloween CM.
