How do you do that? A chain tool doesn't fit; so I can rip the broken chain out but can't press a new chain/pin back in. Help appreciated.

if a chain tool doesn't fit then try a hammer and a punch to push the pin back in. what kind of chain tool are you using ? I have done this few times in life and the chain tool always work for me.

It's the Dura-Ace Track Spanner/Whip. Not only is it too thick, but the shape just does not allow a chain tool to push a pin through. I just can't get an angle on it.
The Park Tool whip I have will have the same issue if the chain breaks. From the looks of the pin, the used a rivet tool or something.

try nail if the punch does work, just cut of the point off it so you wouldn't get hurt by it.

All you need to do is push a pin out but not all the way out on one section of chain. Center it over where it's supposed to sit and whack it with a hammer.
Make sure the underside is properly supported. Most 1/8 chains have enough pin protruding from either side for this to work easily.

I like that. Not sure if it'll go through the opposite plate, but I'll give it a whack.
