I believe you need a passport for Mexico now.

The waves are perfect for body surfing. Do you prefer a wetsuit or skinsuit?

Actually it looks like they postponed the passport requirement until next year:

Travel by land or sea
Currently, US citizens entering and leaving Mexico by land or sea must present either a passport OR a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate. As of June 1, 2009 those traveling by land or sea will be required to present a passport or other WHTI compliant ID such as a passport card (http://gomexico.about.com/od/entryrequirements/f/pass_card.htm).

if you get stuck in mexico because you don't have a Passport, you can swing around through canada to enter

Looks like if you fly, you'll need one to get back into the U.S.; land or by sea passport or government ID. June 2009 - need a passport

There's guys who will get you back into the U.S. with no problems. You just have to deliver a small package for them.

You only need a valid passport in 2009.

You only need DL and birth cert or passport. They like passport better, even if expired. The border man said they prefer it.

Yeah, I was down in Texas last month and needed either passport or ID+birth certificate to get back. Just came back from Canada last week and definitely needed passport to get through customs.
