I'm working on a route that will take me from Nyack through Harriman State Park or perhaps West Point, ending up at the Salisbury Mills/ Cornwall train station.

Is there a way to get through the park that doesn't involve major highways? It looks like it's hard to do this avoid being on the Palisades Parkway.

Thanks!

Change in plans: I now need to get from 10th street in manhattan to Croton-on-Hudson. If I go up 9W in NJ, I can't cross on the Tappan Zee so have to go all the way up to the Bear Mountain Bridge, then ride south another 10 miles.

Is there a way to do this without crossing over into NJ? All the roads to get out of Manhattan look pretty awful. I have until nightfall to get there, but I'd like to stop and enjoy the sights.

If you don't mind flat and boring you could take the south and north county rail trails up to the reservoir and then take 129 to Croton on Hudson. I have no idea what riding on 129 is like.

The ferry from Haverstraw off 9W to cross the Hudson doesn't run on weekends. I really wanted to work a ferry into this thing...

NY Penn Station, through the Bronx and Yonkers, up to Croton-on-Hudson

Everything from Central Park up to the Jerome Park Reservoir is on the NYC bike map (http://www.nycbikemaps.com/). After that... How's route 9/ Broadway in Yonkers? (I gather that 9A after that is fine.)

Sunday route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Maple+St%2FRT-129&daddr=Bear+Mountain+Bridge%2FUS-202%2FUS-6+to:US-9W%2FUS+Route+9W+to:1+Museum+Road+New+Windsor,+NY++12553+to:41.436347,-74.101667&hl=en&geocode=FbnKdAIdNqSY-w%3BFQ5-dgIdPhuX-w%3BFayEdwIdyuSW-w%3B%3B&mra=mi&mrcr=3&mrsp=4&sz=17&dirflg=w&sll=41.436276,-74.100691&sspn=0.00592,0.00928&ie=UTF8&ll=41.36238,-73.985367&spn=0.379304,0.593948&z=11)

Croton-on-Hudson to Bear Mountain, Storm King, through West Point, then to the train station at Salisbury Mills.

I'm particularly concerned with going through the Camp Smith military area.

How's the Bear Mountain bridge? It looks like a toll bridge from the satellite views, but I can't get a good look at the roadway.

Thanks again!

.

Route 9 in Yonkers is very nice. I used it as one of my main training routes last year. If you want to burn more calories, turn Right onto Villard Rd. in Hastings...long STEEP hill. You can rejoin 9 in Dobbs Ferry (you then go down a small hill into town, but make sure you make a left to stay on 9...there are signs though, so it shouldn't be a problem). The stretch in Tarrytown is a bit contested, so take it slow. After that trucks are also on the road and the speed limit picks up. Riding here should be fine, but it may intimidate some riders. At the boarder of Ossining/Croton on Hudson, 9 becomes a freeway and I do not recommend riding on it. Hope this helps.

The Bear Mt. bridge is fine...just watch out for the grates. Yeah, it's a toll road, but you shouldn't need to pay anything.

I ended up doing terribly the day before on 2100' of climbing, and really didn't feel up to this route at 3800'. I'll be back.

The first day, as hard as it was, was a lot of fun. I'll be posting a ride report and pics soon.
