Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - the room of chat

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This (http://bikeforums.net/cgi-sys/mchat.cgi?channel=bikeforums.net) is the only chat software i have at this time... If you guys seriously want a chat room, i'll setup one for registered members.

Joe that chat page looks good !, perhaps you could do a poll in the general forum , and see what the other members think about it . thanks ....:D

I believe someone recently brought up the point that a chat room does not leave a permanent archive of topics discussed. So, if members started using the chat room more than the forum, a lot of info would be lost. I could see how a chat room would be fun to get in to once in a while, but I wouldn't want it to replace the Forum itself. But, I doubt that would actually happen, since most of us just jump on for a few minutes and check for new posts.

don't use it then!
go for it joe, or would it be too much of a hassle to do? surely there can't be any harm in putting it there, then if anyone wants to use it they can do?
cabledonut.
That chat software looks good.

That's my big fear... :(
Maybe it's just me but I don't see any advantages to a chat room...

A chat room could be good for just that .. chatting !! , the forums would still be used for longer , more involved detailed questions !, and I think someone to moderate the room to keep things under control would be a good idea :)

I agree but I think I mentioned when this was discussed previously that one worry I had was that members would chat and not post, and given the time differences, it might mean some members never get to hear the ideas of others.
Also from experience on a motorcycle chat site, the chat room quite often either degenerates into flaming, or a clique.
Can we at least try the chat room on condition that if posting dramatically drops, and flaming and cliques start, we will discontinue the chat room?
I would really like a chat room because sometimes I just want to chat, not really give advice or anything. I would like it also cuz then I could talk to Buddy, he's been trying to call me but with a fam as big as mine, someone talking on the phone isn't well accepted.:D

As Fubar is saying, sometimes one needs to have a conversation with someone, which is where a chat room would be helpful. With a chat room, one could get to the bottom of a problem faster, since with a thread it often takes several days to get to a final conclusion.
So, my final opinion is...with a chat room there would be a place for everybody. If you like to post on the forum, post. If you like to chat, chat. Boy, I am glad I have finally figured this all out in my head.

Fubar / Buddy / Nate, check out http://www.jpilot.com/ , this is the best chat software i have found for the price ($50). I can also limit chat to registered users, very nice layout... hmmmm :)

Joe that is a sweet looking appelet(sp?), but I think for the time being , the software that you already got would do just fine ! .
Anything you use is fine with me Joe. I'm not like Buddy, asking for new and better stuff all the time, never happy the way things are....;) :D J/K

Joe, I think you should go with which ever one you think is best. I, too, think the one you already have is adequate, but if a lot of users start using it, you may want to upgrade to the $50 one. So, how about this; Set up the chat room as is and wait for some feedback and then go from there.

Yes... go with the chatroom that you have. If it takes off, and it looks like we could use the features of the $50 applet, then go for that... You could even have a build-a-chatroom bond drive. :) I'd probably even use a chatroom from time to time... particularly at times like this, when I'm supposed to be working, but when I would rather just shoot the breeze with other cyclists...

Oh, so is this the sort of thing you would say in a chatroom then? I ask merely for information.

I think a negative of a chatroom is that posts might be looked at less. I've tried getting on chat rooms (finding the right one is hard enough) to find answers to problems and usually get very little help. Seems like in chat rooms, you need to be a seasoned squater before anyone actually pays attention to your questions over the useless blabber.
Maybe one on one chatting would be cool. Like an instant messenger type format.

Just wondering, i hate bugs...
joe I was in the chatroom last night with Buddy, Purple Hayes and Klein, and it seemed to be working fine.
Scary how different the time zones were, but instant communication.
AS long as it doesn't diminish my morning read of the new posts, I think it's a good idea.

That was my concern, I dont want chat to hurt the forums in any way. Buddy and i are talking right now, its great... alot of ideas flowing! I think chat may end up helping the forums... i guess we can only wait to see?

Yeah , I think It's kinda fun, and you can log in to the room , then minimise it, check out the forums, and with the click of a button check back to the chat room ! sooo easy.... here's lookin' fwd to chattin' with y'all ....:)

Joe will post some rules and reg's for the use of the room , but basically there the same as the rules for the forums !, No swearing , No offensive behaviour, and It's always easier to agree to disagree ...... and it sure brings your typing up to speed (if you need it !)..... have fun ....CYA.......

This room is great! I was in last night with Joe, Velocipedio, Nebill and a few others. We were having a great time and it feels good to "talk" with people. It's is much easier to get across what you are wanting to say when you can instantly respond. Veloc and I are already trying to set up a meeting together sometime in the spring when I head over towards Montreal.
I can see many hours of time spent in the chat room. Uh, Oh this may not be so good!:D

joe!
i was thinking about the chat room and that:
1. it might be good to have the chat room integrated into the forums so it doesn't open in a new window? maybe with a link on every page of the forums saying maybe, 'back to chatroom' ?
2. once in the chat room, a link saying 'back to forums'?
i'm just not one for new windows opening up everytime you click on a link. i just prefer things neat n tidy all in the same window!
but then saying that i have the forums window up as well as the chat room window with one overlapping the other so i can read the forums as well as keep an eye on the chat.....hmmmm now i'm not sure!
what do you think?
cabledonut.
How come Ba-dg-er is always logged in, but never chatting? And how come the permanent subject seems to be cabledonut saying he only rides because he can sit on his arse while doing it?

fubar - I have a constant connection so I just leave the chat room open. And I often chat, but you don't even stay in for a full minute for me to greet you.
The topic hasn't changed just because nothing funnier has been said since then... you got a recomendation for a new one?
I was just wondering....
