So my girlfriend has a old steel miyata frame. She got a new rear derailleur and i went to put it on and the rear hanger/dropout is totally blown out and stripped is a dropout saver the best route to go? The hole is totally misshapen. is there other options? i searched the forum and found some saying use jb weld then drill it out but it was an old post anything better since then?

The dropout frame saver is the standard fix for a damaged hanger hole. The cost is reasonable and the new threads are as strong as the original. JB Weld isn't strong enough for a permanant repair.

ok good i was worried she'd have to get a new frame. can i just buy the dropput saver insert or do i have to buy the kit it comes in?

Another option is ss/fg- no need for a hanger! An old steel miyata sounds like it might have horizontal dropouts:)

Bike Tools Etc. and Loose Screws sell just the inserts. You will have to drill out the existing hole with a 15/32" dril bit to fit the insert. The inserts come in a couple of lengths depending on your dropout thickness.
