I live in Ohio and am looking for a (cheap) tandem for wife and me to ride. It has been 30 years since we have ridden a bike. Overweight now and looking to get back into shape. I don't want to spend a lot in case it becomes a garage ornament. Who knows me may acctually like it and upgrade. Any one that may have one let me know

Thanks Chuck

I agree with going cheap to try it, but if neither of you have ridden in 30 years you may want to think about getting a single bike first. Use the single bike to polish up your riding skills, and to see if you both like riding, then think about the tandem. A tandem can be a handful to learn on. With the single, if it turns out that only one of you like riding, that person can at least ride the single on their own.

Try: dboutili@tso.cin.ix.net That's a contact address for a local affiliate club of the Tandem Club of America.

My bet is they may be able to help you find a useable bike and are likely to be very helpful in getting you started. Tandem folks tend to be friendly.

Well we got out tandem tonight from Walmart. It is in box not assembled. $258.00 Kent I believe 21 speed. After I got it home I noticed on bottom of box it said both riders sould have minimim 32 1/2 legs. What dose that mean. I am 5' 11" and she is 5' 5". Hate to put it together and find out its too big. Do these kents come in different sizes.

Thanks Chuck

I would suspect it's a poor Chinese translation that means, "both riders should have minimum inseams of 32.5". On the bright side, in addition to poor English translations, the measurements are often times wrong too.

Bottom Line: So long as you can straddle the top tube you should be OK. I suspect that at 5'11" you will be able to do just that, even if your inseam isn't quite 32.5". As for your wife, she should be able to mount the tandem like horse, i.e., you get on first and steady the thing while she steps onto the left pedal and swings her leg over the saddle. Once seated, she won't "need" to get off the tandem until you're done riding or have reached stopping point. Just have her stay "in the saddle" with both feet on the pedals as you stop and start and you'll avoid any stand over clearance issues that she might have IF the tandem's rear top tube is too high.

P.S. This is why it's called your "first tandem". The funny things about first tandems is you'll either find you love it and will pursue your "next tandem" or you'll find it's not your cup of tea and your "first tandem" will also be your "only" or "last" tandem.
