Road Cycling - FSA RD-400 Wheelset?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone out there have any experience with this wheelset? I spoke to FSA on the phone and they (Erik) told me that there would be no problem with their RD-400 and my 200 pounds of body mass. What has your experience been? The advertised weight is a nice, light 1450g. And at their current sale price of $430 they are very attractively priced.
How about reviews? Anyone read anything about these other than FSA advertising propaganda? Plan to sell one of my Kysrium Elite wheelsets (anyone interested?) and get a set of these for climbing.

Your riddin a Dean Ti El Diente with 10 speed record? Holly Crap! ever think about loosing some weight off the engine! instead of a couple hundred grams of wheel weight?

Yeah. Keep thinking about which part of my anatomy to chop off to get rid of that weight, but I hate pain so much. Beside that, this was question about the wheels, a**h***. Not about me or you.

You called that person an "A$$ Hole" ? just cause he wondered why you would spend so much money and effort over a bike and not have concideration for your own body? Geeeesh.... You drive an SUV? Not like he called you a stuffed pig or a fat slob. Makes me recall seeing a couple of (some, not all) fat Litespeed owners last summer struggling up a 3* rise in the road in first gear like they were climbing strait up Mt.Fugi; gasping and weezing for air.....money cant make a rider; was quite a sight to see.

This very nicely illustrates why this forum is no longer interesting and so many folks have dropped it. It has degenerated to the point that someone posts a reasonable (at least I thought it was) question and it turns into stupid, off-thread responses from a clutch of no-nothings. And generally personal in their vein. I didn't ask if I should lose weight or anything to do with me, other than my interest in finding out something about a wheelset. Neither of the responses have anything to do with the thread. So why don't you jump off? Unless, of course, you have something constructive to say about the RD-400 wheelset. And no. I don't drive and don't care for SUVs. Which has nothing to do with an RD-400 wheelset.

And both of you could use a bit of education (probably too much to ask for). Or at least a spell-checker.

Wow, that was completely rude! Back the f*ck off of the guy. It isn't like 200lbs is huge or anything, some people are just built bigger. I know a guy who is 220lbs, but he's 6'4" of solid lean muscle with maybe 8% body fat, who the hell are you to be judging someone over the internet. Even if someone is a little overweight, no reason they can't have a nice and light bike if they want and can afford it.
As for the wheels, sorry but I have no experience with them yet. I've been looking at them a little though and they do look nice, especially at that price.
I forget who said it but "Strong, light or cheap-pick two" (Kieth Bontrager??)

Just an fyi that the real world weight on these wheels is anywhere from 60-110 grams above advertised depending on the set. I also heard that some of the sets were not true upon delivery. Both minor issues IMO but worth mentioning.
They do have a fairly interesting concept with the rim design and stiffness shouldn't be a problem. 430 bucks for a good set of wheels that you will not see on every other bike isn't a bad deal.

Mr. Scapin........I really had no negative intent behind my comment to you, just thought of it is being constructive, sorry if it offended you. It's just that I have found that from training and a conscience effort on health and nutrition are the most worthwhile "upgrades" a rider can experience, you were talking about a wheel upgrade to climb better; maybe I went about it the wrong way. Didn't know I had to stay on just one topic. I have the same wheels you are using, but noticed American Classic the other day, they have a set you might be interested in, the CR-420, 620g. front, 820g. rear. They look very nice and a rather reasonable price. www.amclassic.com Peace brother.........
If you really want light weight wheels...check out the Nimble Spider: http://www.nimble.net/ 1350 gram/set for $500 and they sell the rims for 60 a piece
well I guess I'll go ahead and actually answer your question. I just got a pair, and I have about 150 miles on them they appear to be well built, they were true out of the box and so far my impression is they ride pretty darn well.
downside - they don't weigh 1450, mine came in at 1558 with the rim strips involved but without the skewers. figure 30gs less without the strips (as though that matters.)
At 429 bucks, not a steal but pretty reasonably priced for a decent quality wheel. I think you'd be hard pressed to beat the weight in that price range - most wheels down there have published rider weight limits that you won't hit and much higher prices.
Can't speak to longevity, we'll see after 1000 miles.

Thanks to all. I think I'll give them a try.

Did you get these wheels? How did they turn out? How about you Trogon? They still doing pretty well?

I've received my set, but won't have any miles on them until next month. They look very nice. I'll post again once I've got some time on them.

no complaints so far.
OK, I'm a 170lb old fat guy. I just put a pair of these on my Bianchi Team Carbon. Not at stiff as the Velomax hoops on my Bianchi Boron but they make climbing some of the bad/good hills in ATL a little easier especially when trying to outsprint some 25 year old punk to the top. The campy freehub is loud as all get out. There is a recall on the slewers, The replacements look a little flimsy but no more than some of the other stupid light parts out there. I did manage to hit a @#%%^& city water turn off valve (in the shade without the cover on it) and the rims are still true as new. +/- 100 miles on 'em so far

I've put about 1,000 miles on mine since last spring. Including riding the BTC and some local hills. Have been bullet-proof, thus far and I am a svelte 200+ pounds. Have hit some pretty nasty holes and such and they have proved to be just fine. Are a little loud when coasting, but seem to be very rugged and nice and light.
