Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - The Knockaround has arrived

The starting point for my knockaround bike has arrived. It's a mid-90's Univega Alpina 5.3 MTB 23". I got it on Ebite for $78. Almost brand new tires. I put the trekking bars on that I had already. I've got to go get a couple things at the LBS to round her out for now, grips and some bar tape. Maybe some bar ends just to play with. But it's a start and something I can play with while I'm waiting for my bent trike.

Neat knockaround!

When you get your bar tape, it might be a good idea to pick up two boxes. The Trekking bars can use up more than a normal set of drop bars.

nice - if you've got the trekking bars why do you want the bar ends?

Also, shopping list? (ergon grips, either time atac or powergrips, new saddle)

Mark, the bar ends are just to play around with. Put them here, put them there. Just really messing. But heck yes the seat is getting replaced.

I decided not to worry about the grips much, I've got some foam left that can go under the tape. The tape and gloves should be fine for the time being.

This bike really is just a fill in until the trike gets here. But the maiden voyage was a starteling eye opener. I am SOOOO out of shape it's scary. This is going to be a long voyage. Thank the gods I inherited my Dads mule headed stubborness.

Those first couple of rides can be reality checks of the first degree, lol. Just don't get too caught up in doing major miles, and remember each day you ride is more than you were doing before.

Being hard headed/stubborn/smart like tractor,strong like bull can be a great thing. It can also make you very sore..........or so I've heard:innocent:

Man you hit that on the head Tony. The first ride wasn't even a mile and my legs were screaming, "Are you out of your FREAKING MIND?!!!". But thats okay, reality has been checked and target aquired. Game plan has been set in motion, now it's just a matter of time. Ben-gay and Icy Hot at the ready.

Make sure the seatpost isn't stuck.

MTB's are some of the major recipients of Trekking bars. Many more hand positions to choose from to reduce fatigue.

I hope to put some trekking bars on my hybrid w/in the next month or two. I think the added hand positions will be great! My current handlebars (risers) need new grips and lack bar ends. Added up the price of decent bar ends and some nice ergo grips, and it came to about the same cast as I can get butterfly trekking bars and some handlebar tape for, so bye bye grips and bar ends and HELLO to the world of the trekking bar!

For me the trekking bars were the best investment. Wouldn't trade'em for a new bike!!
