Bicycle Mechanics - Campy ergo in pure friction?

I'm having trouble with shifting on a triple crank with ergo shifters. The shifter is not indexed to the crank but it moves only in small increments, and in some gears I can't prevent the chain from rubbing on the derailleur cage, even after fine adjustments on the cable tension. It happens mostly when I'm pedalling out of the saddle and the frame flexes a bit.

I think having seen somewhere that you can put the shifter in pure friction. It might not be a good idea to do it (I can live with the rubbing), but has anybody done it?

Here's a diagram... (mine is a pre-97 Sachs lever actually). Remove the G-springs (#4)?

I don't believe it can be done. If you remove the G springs there will be nothing to hold the shifter against the pull of the dreailler return spring.

Most unfortunate. A non-indexed shifter, particularly for the front derailleur -- what a great concept! :)

At least Ergo provides finer increments than STI, but I still like being able to feather the position of either derailleur cage arbitrarily.

Say I have my chain on the middle ring. I drop a cog and it rubs. I click one stop up the front D and it rubs again but from the other side of the cage. The trimming is not infinite.

Are you using a double or a triple front derailleur (FD)?

What speed FD?

What speed chain?

Sounds also like the derailleur may not be parallel to the chain line/chain rings. Have you tried adjusting the "tail" of the FD slightly toward or away from the stays?

Neither do I. I've used Campy old and new style on triples and doubles. Never had rub that couldn't be fixed with a little trim. It really sounds like a ft der issue. And not really an issue more like a minor adjustment. Go to the Park tool site and read up on adjustment. Good luck

The general opinion is that (possibly unless it's a QS shifter) the increments already available are so small that no further trimming ability is considered required.
