Hello all. Fist time poster, long time lurker.


I've got the choice between an 80's Nishiki Olympic and a 1971 Peugeot UO-8. Both are $100 and in similar condition. I'm a newbie (obviously) and just want to do some basic road riding here in Seattle.

Which one would you go with and why?

Somwhat of a tough choice. The Nishiki is a solid Japanese made bike, neutral steering, but easy to get replacement parts for. The Peugeot is a nice classic bike that is lighter and more responsive. However, the bike has all French threaded parts, so replacements will be harder to fine, not impossible, though. I would go with the Nishiki, based on the reliability of getting replacement parts.

I would personally go with the Peugeot but I'm an experienced vintage bike enthusiast and familiar with dealing with the quirks of French bikes from the classic period (oh, and I have a UO-8 ;) ). For you I would recommend sticking with the Nishiki for all the reasons jacksbike mentioned.

About the only bike a UO-8 is lighter than is a Schwinn Varsity. I do not know the Nishki line up order, but I bet it is lighter by a long stretch.

Put it this way, if the Nishiki has aluminum rims, take it. Hands down.
