Hi!

I'm new to this forum (very interesting discussions btw).

I just got my Trek 5200 Project One (Andromeda paint scheme; it's awesome under sunlight :D !!!). Would really like to hit the roads, but here in Montreal, snow is still melting and the roads are still filled with salt and rocks used for deicing. Can it be harmful for the bike or is cleaning it when coming back home with water and soap enough to avoid corrosion (I don't know salt's effect on carbon and don't really want to know :p )?

Any comments would be welcome

Use regular car wax to wax your frame then hose it off when you are done using a light mild soap.

And welcome to the forums

I don't know about the carbon, but it will do a number on the derailers, chain, and other parts. I'd save that bike until the salt is gone.

Keep it lubed and clean as much as you can till salt is gone. Nice bike.

i'm with blwyn on this. if you can, ride another bike. if you can't, ride the trek on the trainer. salt won't affect the frame directly -- through getting grit between fittings and the frame [like between the front brake and the fork and the rear brake and the seatstays] is a bad thing. neither carbon nor aluminum will rust, but your spokes and shift/brake cables are ferrous metal and they will oxidize very quickly in the montreal salt, particularly when the air and roads are damp.

where did you get the bike? performance? martin swiss? cycle paul?
