Northern California - Why I didn't ride my bike Saturday

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Because I was out REALLY late with my photo students on Friday night. We went to Mare Island and made photos late at night under the street lights.
This post is really just an excuse to post this photo I shot.
Then Saturday I had to go to an all-day Journalism conference. I miss my Saturday ride....

Great pic.

I didn't ride my bike today because it was too windy!!! Tomorrow may be some of the same.

I didn't ride today or yesterday because of the wind. Argh.

These winds should be history by tonight. I hope.

Curtis, that's seriously a hot picture. That student gets an A, right? :innocent:

Hey Deb, I think that student stayed late after class if you know what I mean...Professor Corlew said she had been very, very bad...In a good way:innocent:

Only 1 strobe for that picture?

That's too artistic. I don't have enough creativity to do that.

What did I do??? Just spend all day, looking at debug logs, working a P1 all day long ... and just looking at the sun and blue skies, and not being able to enjoy it  ... Oh well ...

Nice work.

I didn't ride my bike Saturday....as I just flew back from Boston at midnight then have one day with the kids before flying to Beijing Sunday. Riding an exercise bike in a hotel gym just won't cut it.

I did 71 miles Friday, in the wind. Wicked crosswinds up at Lake Berryessa. Think of the wind as resistance training. You are a bicycle racer.:thumb:

I didn't ride today because of a company picnic. You do what you have to do.:notamused:

Riding into the winds on the bay yesterday had me in the same gear I use for 6% hills.

I really really wanted to ride my bike to work, but, like many of you said, the wind sucks. Tomorrow probably.

I went hiking in Marin instead. My eyes hurt from the wind and pollen!

You're pretty talented with the camera, btw.

Just one from the side. Everything else is the lights that were there.

I believe that's the nicest "HTFU" I've ever received. Thanks, Scottie, for not ripping me a new one for being a weather wussy.

I am disappointed that the winds are still howling. Our ride to/from Winters will certainly be an exercise in HTFU. :notamused:

I didn't ride Saturday (or Friday or today, so far) because Thursday, immediately after I downshifted to the inner chainring on my approach to a hill, my chain came off and damaged my rear wheel.

The chain had never come off before. I'd never had even the slightest shifting problem. I knew right away my chain had hit my bottom bracket, and yet it took several minutes for the what's-wrong-with-this-picture fog to clear from my brain. I put the chain back on, spun the rear wheel, it barely turned, I unhooked the brake-cable noodle from the arm link, spun it again, the wheel wobbled like something out of a Buster Keaton movie, I cursed myself for not knowing how to true a wheel, I cursed myself for not knowing enough about bike repair to know whether a wheel-truing was all it needed, and then I thanked Lady Luck that it happened near the end of my 15-mile ride. I only had to walk my bike three miles home.

It's been in the shop ever since. The shop mechanic said he wouldn't be able to look at my bike until Wednesday, at which point I cursed my ignorance again for making me a hostage to this madness. Wednesday! Before he could even look at it!

Other than the excess lighting on her hair, I really like the shot! Which camera and strobe did you use?

That's crazy-talk, Marge. :)

What - you don't have a spare set of wheels?

Yet another reason to curse.

UPDATE, 7:40PM-- Just so my LBS mechanics don't come off looking like putzes, the senior man called today and said my bike was fixed. Yippee! (The new guy, who took my bike Friday morning and said he couldn't even look at it till Wednesday, still seems to be learning how long it takes to get work done.) I would've posted this earlier, but I was too busy riding.

I did bike on Saturday :D. It was beautiful on Mt. Diablo, windy but mostly tailwind, and the air was so clean. Perfect climbing temperature too. The downhill part was very dangerous and slow though because of the side winds. The new pavement is fantastic but I don't like the deeper ditch especially where they added some rocks. Many times the wind was pushing me too close to the side of road and that made me really nervous when some cars were going up and cutting corners.

Great shot ccc. I bet there's a street light hiding just behind her head.

cccorlew
10-12-08, 10:00 PM
Yep, that light behind her is a street light. The strobe is just an old Vivitar 283 (circa 1983) on manual.

Yep, Maddy get's an A, but not for being a model, but because her photos are really nice.
No, My Lil Pony doesn't worry about the kids that are our daughters age.
Camera: Nikon d200, tripod and a 30 second exposure.

And I didn't wear a wet suit either. I also didn't trash my wheels (bummer on the wheels...)
