Just wanted to mention one more time that Home Depot has a fold-down bike rack for $4.99. I have two in my garage, and they wrok pretty well for my kind of maintenance - lubricating my chain, filling tires, adjustments, etc. No, not as good as one of those $100+, but for someone like me it works great. In fact, I use one to store my bike when not riding it.
They are so cheap and so handy, and modifications could be made (i.e. add a clamp of some sort) to make them even more usable. The top tube simply sits on the bend in the clamp.
