I have a variety of lower back issues that don't bother me at all during thousands of miles of road rides. Nearly every time I run more than a mile or two or do a CX race of even 30 minutes, I have lower back pain/cramping.

During a recent short training run I tried wearing a basic generic back support like this (without suspenders):

It seemed to work great, no pain or cramping and not much adverse impact on breathing ability. So today I wore one for my first race of the season (minimal running, 3 dismounts per lap, no brutal runups). I had no back pain, no back cramps and no lower back soreness even 8 hrs after the race. Like taking 2 Advil without the side effects/potential long term damage.

Obviously not a cure for my underlying back issues, but it sure seemed to get me through the race without any discomfort and sure seems to have eliminated the two day post-race recovery.
