Bicycle Mechanics - front derailleur reach

I need a front derailleur that will reach out quite far, the triple derailleur I bought won't get out to large chainring. I have the BB pretty close to crank already, thanks, this is a 1970s mixte frame bike

Have you backed out the high limit screw all the way?

You meant you have the crank close to the frame ... right?

Yes limit screws are all the way out, height is correct and crank is about 1/2 to 1/3" from frame But I need the der to reach out to about 60mm from center of BB and it won't swing that far

How much room is there from the teeth of the rings to the chain stay? There should only be around 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Even at 1/4 inch that's the most it should be.

Are you sure it's not the shifter limiting the travel of the derailler and not the other way around?

Seems like chainline (crank) is too far outward. You want the smallest chainring about 1/8" from the chainstays and the end of the crankarm about 1/4". Chainline should be 40-45mm to the middle-chainring C-C from seat-tube. Outer chainring shouldn't be more than 50mm away.

+1, before you buy a new BB, is it installed in the correct position? I reversed one once and took about 15 minutes before I realized the mistake.

Is the BB axel intended for a trippel crank? If it is made for a singel or doubbel you need to look into that first (as is said before in different words I guesss).

Next thing is the tripple derailleur made for a tripple chainring? Just asking. I am struggeling with the same problems at the moment, on a 81 mixte. Wanted more gears and different gears.

I ended up putting "new" shifters, front derailleur, and rear derailleud, transfered from an older MTB.

+1 to the above. short end of the axle goes on the non-drive side. of everything is on correct, then check out a new front derailleur. i've delt with many front derailleurs and never wasn't able to get the travel to go far enough when i used the right one.

I did put new derailleurs for triple front and long cage rear and have friction shifters so I think I need a different front der. Trouble is which one? I bought the triple front der that had the capacity and large ring capability and got this one that doesn't work. Is there a spec I can ask for that would have more swing distance? I think I can only draw in crank about 1/3" before it hits frame.
