My wife and I ride comfort bikes and I would like to identify and purchase a maintenance and repair book to keep them running. I am interested in doing the straight forward adjustments. I have no delusion of replacing the techies in my local bike shop but it would be nice to have the basic knowledge to get enough done to get them to the good guys when the problem is more complex.

What book/manual would you suggest?

"Bicycling Magazine's Complete Guide to Bicycle Maintenance and Repair" is a good basic manual. Park Tool's web site (www.parktools.com) and Sheldon Brown's web site (www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/) are also excellent resources.

+1 on Bicycling magazines manual. Best $20+ I ever spent. Until you are confident, only do one job at a time, and stick with it until it's right. It may take a few rides and readjustments to get it right. Like getting your new brake pads to be quiet. Then it's OK to start another task. Soon you'll be confildent and quick. bk

The other "big" book to consider is the Zinn book that matches your bike type.
