A little more than halfway through a 30 mile ride today both my Achilles tendons started to hurt. A bit later we stopped for lunch and still had 7 miles to go to get back to the truck and load up for home. They were really screaming by the time we got back to the truck. Now this is out of the blue never happened before. I know I haven't ridden much since I'm on strike and not commuting to work but I have been keeping active. Guess I'll have to make sure to start stretching better before riding from now on. Man it sucks getting older.

Ouch! Hope you're feeling better soon. :(

Did your bike fit change in any way? I had a similar problem. I discoverd that my cleats had loosened and slipped forward. When I repositioned them, things got better (but not perfect).

Go back to work before I get laid off. ;) You aren't the only people building those planes.

They are talking again. I'm enjoying the time off cause I know its gonna be a madhouse when we go back. Bike fit didn't change any at all. I use mini clips on this bike so the cleats have no bearing. I iced them both down really well tonight and loaded up on Ibuprofen hopefully that will help.

You shouldn't need to stretch before riding a bike. I'd suggest your seat is too high... the Achilles pain is always an indicator of that.

Are you riding in cooler weather right now? I go through a brief period every fall and spring were I get some mild discomfort with the achilles tendons until I remember to wear warmer taller socks. This always takes care of it.

I've been riding this bike since late April and haven't had one iota of pain anyplace on my body from riding it. As the previous poster wrote it was cool and a little breezy Sunday but I was wearing wool crew socks and light fleece pants so I was warm enough I think.

Perhaps the lay off has got the tendons and rest of the body out of condition. I know that if I have a lay off- I do a gentle 20 miler first of all just to find out what is going to hurt. Then I can do the harder ride once I am certain that mothing has changed.

And check that bike over aswell. Surprising how many things get knocked while it is in the shed.

I am having the same problem. But for me it is surely the new bike I am riding. It seems fit pretty well, but after two 30+ rides this weekend, they are quite sore today. I tried lowering my saddle, which I thought worked for the first ride. Only during the following day's ride they flared up again. More the right side than the left.

Gads I could hardly walk at times today. Ice and Ibuprofen and try to stay off them till the inflammation dies down a bit. I have a full range of motion its just when I put my weight on them for a while and walk a bit they really flare up.

Trust me. This is based on hard experience in randonnees.

Lower your seat height, even by 1/4 of an inch at a time. And do not ride the bike again, either of you, until the pain has completely disappeared.

Stretching and cool weather should have no effect.

Good luck with the strike. I was out for almost 4 weeks last year. The picketing was harder than working and the weather was too cold for riding. The one night I rode in for picket duty I got a flat. I suffer from a heel spur in my right foot so often experience pain, though more often from long drives than from riding the bike.

I have achilles problems bad on my right leg. I ride with a strap-on ankle brace ACE TEC ZONE

I rode by the Renton plant Sunday....several green bodies out on rail cars just waiting to be finished. Picket line well staffed, even early on Sunday morning.

BTW, every time I ride through that area I'm amazed by the amount of development at the south end of Lake Washington...I wonder how long all of that retail space is going to take to fill up now that the economy is headed south.

I've been having this too, but it's funny: it doesn't hurt during a ride -- only the day after. I thought it was a pulled muscle, but it didn't get better in a few days.

I think I'll lower the seat a bit.

I have 5 different bikes and I'm pretty sure the measurement from saddle to pedal are probably all different and I haven't had any problem with any of them and I have taken rides of 30 miles and more on each one of them. I took this ride on my favorite and most often used bike. I commute on it and ride it recreationally and nothing has changed. I'm thinking that the fact I haven't been riding daily to work since this stupid strike has had an affect on the Achilles so I'm going to continue the ice and Ibuprofen and rest till the pain it gone then see what happens. Could be a long winter in more ways than one
