I have been bitten by the Xtracycle bug after reading the posts here...
My plan is to pick up a steel framed mountain bike and convert it.. To that end I would like to find a super strong wheelset especially the back wheel... I am thinking of something with 48 spokes etc.
Question is where does one find heavy duty mountain bike wheels ?.. Most of the sites I have checked out only seem to carry the light weight *fragil" type wheels..
I am looking for a dealer that can sell me a set ready to install as I don't have that much experiance building these things....
Any ideas appreciated..
Thanks

48 spoked wheels are def. strong however, I would think excessively strong in the form of an Xtracycle. Finding a 135 spacing rear hub to accept 48 spokes will be a little more expensive as will finding a 48 hole 26" rim.
I would think something like Shimano XT hubs and Rhyno Lite XL's laced 36 hole would be pretty burly. Or if you're looking for extra super strong find a deeper and wider rim. Those build strong wheels.

Check out Peter White's site:

Lots of information to read/digest. He's building me a dynamo-driven front wheel right now.

I'd think Airline rims would bee good, mine has some, the rim is like a v shape, mine go through alot and never let me down, I hit curbs while carrieing heavy things, and still nothing, cheap to, mine came from the garbage lol

I got a pair of Shimano XT hubs and Rhyno Lite XL's laced 36 hole wheels new for cheap on ebay. Ment for heavy duty down hillers, I use them on an MTB tandem bike, so they should work fine for you.

Consider 36-hole Alex DM24 (http://www.alexrims.com/) or Sun Rhyno Lite (http://www.sun-ringle.com/index.php5). Both are plenty strong and good candidates for an Xtracycle. Any LBS should be able to order them for you.

A well built 36 spoke wheel with quality components is plenty strong. We use one on our tandem, and no one would ever accuse us of being a lightweight team:p

I agree, 36 spokes on a quality rim should be more than sufficient.
