Got tired of my worn Chorus 93' front derailleur, and replaced it with a Centaur 09', hoping for improved shifting. In the first week it did amazing front derailleur shifts, but I could no longer use the 3 'big' cogs while on the little ring, as the cage is much narrower for 9/10 than 8 speed. So I adjusted..No real gain. I seem to get rubbing when on the big ring or on the small ring depending on adjustment.

Any suggestions about bettering the performance of the current hardware
or
Will I have to go back to a 8 speed Front derailleur [with lower quality shifting]
or
Can I run a narrower 9 speed chain and have is shift properly, and not grind the 8 speed cogs

I don't know if the new QS front derailleurs are different, but I ran a pre-QS 10s Chorus on a Shimano 600 8s (incl chain) STI setup, and currently have a pre-QS record 10s on a Shimano 9s bar-end setup, complete with a 600 tri-color 8s rear derailleur and 9s chain. I had no FD shifting issues on either bike.
