I have recently started to ride with LOOK pedals & now have this pain on the back on my left knee. It's on the inside back portion of my knee. I believe that this is because of the fact that I'm not used to pulling as I'm pedaling & the exertion of this movement has given this portion of my knee alot of stress. A new area of my leg/knees that hasn't been used much & now I've had this pain. It's been gradually diminishing since because I decided to concentrate on the swimming portion of my training. Nevertheless I want to know if some of you have experienced this type of knee pain before. Any suggestions, experiences, advice..
Thanks
Neil
I ride using an old pair of look pedals and it took me a while to set them up properly in order to avoid knee pain. Hopefully it is just a fitting problem, this might be the first thing to look at????

I had some pain in the back of my knee at the very top of my calf. Moved my seat forward and took care of the problem. I also ride with looks but the seat move took care of the problem.

Other things to check:
Cleat position on shoe
Are you using Red (floating) or Black (fixed) cleats? Red is generally thought to be easier on the knees.
Seat height? If you've recently changed pedal systems, you may have a functionally lower or higher seat now.
And, sometimes it's just a matter of your body getting used to a new motion. If the pain seems to be subsiding, you're probably going to be all right. But seek professional help if it continues.

for one, you shouldn't literally feel like you're pulling up on the pedal on the upstroke....that is unless you're sprinting. the main thing is to keep the stroke as smooth a circle as possible, and that should feel something like push down -- pull back --- pull up --- etc.
i.e., you shouldn't ever feel like you're consciously doing any of the above.... it should just feel.... fluid.
What is your cadence?
I'm guessing you were using platform pedals before you switched to Look and you may have been pedalling too slow. Slow is hard on the knees.
Try to keep your cadence between 75-95 and see if that helps.
As nuovorecord suggested, try the RED cleats.
I used the black cleats for about a year and often had knee pain. Since switching to the red cleats I rarely have knee pain.
How are your knees/legs positioned when riding?
(1) In toward the top tube?
(2) Parallel with the top tube?
(3) Pointing out away from the top tube?
For most people (3) is bad. If you're riding that way try moving your knees in toward the top tube (angle your feet in the cleats - heels pointed out slightly).
