Fifty Plus (50+) - New member says hello

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi Guys and Gals,
I'm new here, been lurking a-while, but joined today.
I'm going to be 50 next June. I hope that's close enough to hang out here with you.
I'm doing the "kids are both in High School, and I'm getting active again thing". Love riding bikes, swimming and going to the gym. need to lose weight.
Here's a pic of my bicycles. My friend Tony gave them to me. Pair of 1976 Schwinn Suburbans.

I love tooling around on the bike. I plan to get a new bike this year. Maybe a Surly. I'm not sure yet. I hope to gain lots of knowledge here.
Thanks,
Paul

I'll say Well Come and Greetings to you! 50 in June is likely close enough. At the speed time travels after 40 you'll be lucky to get another post in before your birthday.
If you've been lurking you know the goings on, so pull up a chair and join in.

Yes Paul and welcome,
You will gain knowledge here! Some of it may even be correct and apply to your cycling. Other bits will be entertaining, but maybe not particularly applicable. And that's okay.
Just so long as you like pie.

Welcome to 50+ and for those of us that have a few years beyond 50, we can "lend" you some of those months if it helps.

Welcome! I'm pretty new here myself (only joined in June, though like you, I lurked a bit first).
As someone who doesn't usually care for green bikes, I have to say those two are pretty spiffy-looking. The frame pump on the downtube of one of them looks a lot like the one I have on my Univega.

This am did 20 miles (in wind, cold and clouds) on the bike, walked two miles, swam 1 hour and worked out at the gym.
It gets habit forming!
I started "getting in shape" when I was 58, almost 11 years ago, which makes me about 19-20 years older than you are!
But, welcome anyway.

Thanks for all the nice replies and words of encouragement.
I am in Euharlee, Ga. Just outside of Cartersville. Exit 288 I-75. I'll do the profile tomorrow.
Not that I begrudge them (I like riding motorsickles too) but, it's funny, lots of my guy friends are buying Harleys and I'm after a new bicycle. When I got the Schwinn's, I remembered how much I loved to ride. I must have traveled many thousands of miles on bicycles in my youth. The world was my oyster. I'm glad to have that enthusiasm back.
When I get in a-little better shape, I'm going to ride the Silver Comet Trail. I've lost 25 pounds so far and I'm not giving up for nothin! The bike is a big help.
Thanks,
Paul

Yes,welcome Paul. That Tony's a good freind, the bikes look great.
As to the Harleys, you can buy yourself a whole mess-o-bikes for
a lot less than the cost of a Harley. Looking foreward to ride reports.

You would hope so but just 2 Colnago Exterme Power FRAMES would cost $13,000. Then you would have to buy the components. A Harley comes complete.
Welcome Paul,
Glad your here and great that the weight is coming off. You will spend the rest of your life trying take/keep the weight off, as I do.
Please feel free to ask any questions we'll find an answer.
You understand, of course, that you will be on probation until next June?
I would say that I used to live in Georgia, but it was Atlanta that I lived in for 8 years, not Georgia.
I rode up Kennesaw mountain a couple of times; looks like you're not too far from there.
Ditto on the welcome Paul. As you've probably already seen, your story and situation is very similar to a lot of ours. I too started riding at 49/50, kids in High School that were pretty good athletes and I was way out of shape.
Have fun on the Silver Comet. Check out the Cheaha Challenge out of Piedmont, Al and 3 Gap/Six Gap out of Dahlonega some time. Those could be some excellent goals to target if that appeals to you.
I love my treks

Welcome to the monkey house. There's always room for a couple more folks from the peach state. You should become a good hill rider after doing much riding around that part of the state. You'll love the Silver Comet. Be aware that the section between Rockmart and Cedartown is not flat like the rest of the trail. But it is a scenic section.

Welcome, Paul,
It's likely that you've a long bit of cycling ahead of you. Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122 years of age, rode a bike until she was at least 100. But it wasn't just the cycling that kept her going. She loved port wine and chocolate, and smoked until she was 117, when her vision failed her and she couldn't light the cigarettes.

I always wanted to know how or where the use of sicle is used instead of cycle. Is this a deep south thing?

I don't think so. The first person I heard use that word (motorsickle) was Arlo Guthrie.
"I don't want a pickle. Just want to ride my motorsickle".

Yea, that's where I heard it too.
I had a DR-650 Suzuki for awhile. Will probably get another one someday. I did a-lot of trail (motor & pedal) riding when I was a kid.
I don't know what it is about bicycles? They're just a bunch of fun.
I'm contemplating updating the Suburban. Modernizing it a bit. I definitely need a new seat. The one that's on it is in great shape but it's uncomfortable. It pokes me where I don't want to be poked. OUCH! I need a taller handlebar stem too. Any Ideas would be appreciated.
OH YEA! HEY BLUESDOG....That's where I am. Right near Rockmart, GA. My wife is a Chemist at KIMOTO Tech. in Cedartown. The Silver Comet trail ends right where she works. BTW, I like your forum name. Are you a musician. I play guitar. I have a friend in Milledgeville...Bill Lundy...do you know him?

The older Harley riders would say the 1/2 Harley is the V-Rod. Even though the V-Rod performs better.
Something to do with resisting change.:)
pwhallon, welcome aboard, I think you will like it here.

Welcome to the group Paul. If you stick with it cycling becomes part of your lifestyle. I wouldn’t have believed it myself but it is true. I got back into cycling last April or May. Just wanted something for some morning exercise and maybe a little light shopping now and then. Ended up getting a trailer and started doing my grocery shopping whenever my wife didn’t feel like going. Not long after than I started riding with some friends from a local bike club. In no time at all it seems I had over 500 miles on my comfort bike. Got a deal on a MTB and discovered I liked that as well. As I started to lose weight and get in better shape I decided I needed a road bike so I could ride even more often and further.
When we decided to take a vacation with our travel trailer to Colorado I decided to take my MTB with me and on those days we aren’t sight seeing I have been riding it around exploring the area. As far as saddles suggestions go? Adjustments can make a world of difference. There is no magic saddle there are only saddles you get used to. Some saddles will work better than others but don’t be too quick to give up on the one you have until you have enough miles on it that you know it isn’t going to work, unless you go the recumbent route. If you do decide you have to have a new saddle, and many of us do, be prepared for sticker shock.

Welcome aboard. I guess a Harley might be alright if you're not man enough to make the wheels turn on your own!
Hey Fella's, this guy thinks hes going to getA new bike.
The joke's on you pal, we have a thing here called n+1, which means you'll NEVER be satisfied with A new bike. as soon as you get A new bike, you'll plan upgrades, and which bike you'll lust after next. And, if you have a road bike, you'll NEED a MTB, then you'll NEED a hybrid, then a SS, then maybe a fixie. Then it starts all over again.
Any way don't say you weren't warned, Welcome to the ranch.
Love the color BTW.
