Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - What ever happened to? Lost Clydes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey just wanted to start a post see what ever happened to some of the old regular posters in this sub-forum. Looking for JumboRider, Smiley Dave who had the new trike (can't recall his username), Caincando, and there's probably more.
Chime in you guys...want to hear how things are going. trying to keep the motivation and comraderie (spelling) up.
If there are others who have gone astray, post their username and maybe they'll come out or maybe some of them have kept in touch beyond the forums??.
Thanks

IIRC Jumbo is long gone, I tried pinging him a while back and got no response. Very sad.
Also rollerdavem was on the sidelines, but hasn't been for awile. Another sad one.
I thought I saw Cain recently..

I think some leave then return with a new sign on name not wanting others to know. Has happened before in other forums.

I might find that to be a benefit. :-)

Jumbo disappeared after getting into an argument with, ahem, a Historian over what Jumbo thought of as "The War of Northern Aggression." But that aside, he was in trouble from the beginning. His approach was to thrown money at his obesity, spending lots of money on a customized bike and gear. Also he tried too hard to do too much. It's easy to fall into that habit, and I can't say I've escaped it myself.
I miss both Jumbo and Rollerdavem, and would welcome them back in a moment.
Caincando is probably out riding. He was near goal weight, and so he's probably "graduated" from the forum. I wish him well.

Becky W. is another.
She did that long ride (30+ miles?) with Solveg and then seemed to lose interest?
Maybe it was doing a bit too much and then a "how do I top that" feeling?
There is a feeling in the forum that you always have to top your previous best.
That can be kind of a downer if that was maybe a bit too much. It kind removes the "fun factor".
I know that's happened to me, and my longest ride is quite short compared to the majority of the posters. I've found myself not wanting to even ride for several days because anything less almost feels like a failure.

The good thing about bikejournaldotcom. Ranking me with others really helps. You learn to appreciate even the shortest of rides. I've been ahead of others by .25 of a mile then they go do a .5 mile!:D

Once I got over that feeling, I started to enjoy riding much more. I don't have to go out and ride more than 50 miles on the weekend to feel like I've accomplished something. 2 weeks ago I only did 20 miles on my weekend ride. This weekend I did 40. Compared to my weekday commute of 25-30miles a day, 40 isn't that far. *shrugs* So what?
If I always had to top my longest ride, I'd be ready to race Furnace Creek by now! :roflmao2: I pick one event to call my "big goal" for the year. I don't need to top that ride anywhere else during the year. It might not even be my longest event. It could be that I have a "hilliest" ride I'd like to do, or a really flat ride with a personal best average speed in mind.
In all seriousness, some days I'm happiest just riding a couple miles around the neighbourhood with my dog running next to me.

What is your present rank on BJ?

What is your present rank on BJ?
MrBeanz- 3720 miles........ranked # 1061
Gina- 2809 miles.............ranked # 1647
I view my ranking in the "OUTDOOR" miles only. I don't compare us to indoor trainer riders, strictly outdoor.:thumb:
MY best was in 2005 with 7300 miles...ranked about 160.:p
Yeah, I wonder about some guys from a couple of years ago:
Mikabike and
pwrdbytrd
Two clydes who were around before they clyde forum started up.
I also wonder about King Termite, although I see him here sporadically.

They keep me going. DAD rides his Birthday miles 6 days a week.
I commute to his house 15 round trip 3 to 5 days a week.

Well, don't just assume that because they're not posting, they're not riding- that may or may not be the case. It's the nature of internet forums in general to be more attractive to people while they're learning, and then for them to lose interest in the forum to some extent when they've gleaned the knowledge that's available.
I don't know how the numbers work out, but I remember at the Ride Dallas, there were about 2,000 riders, and 7 or 8 of them posted on bikeforums.net. So it's not every rider in the world is here.

KT is doing alright. He's still riding, but not as much as he'd like due to some on/off issues he was having with his shoulder.
I just helped him move a refrigerator into his garage this weekend. He's spending most of his time at BF over on Foo if you're looking for him.

Becky chimed in a bit ago saying she hadn't ridden much, but was getting back on the bike.
I agree that the goals can take some fun out of it. I am in my post-century funk combined with weather getting cool/losing daylight doldrums. Thinking about converting my exercise bike to clipless. :P

I like to look just at texas because it gives me a higher ranking. In TX you are #13! (DAD is #3, Chuckhg #11)
Way way down at #41 is Evblazer who finally is holding off #42 Kwijybow (fellow recumbent commuter/rando rider from my parts) for 4 days now woot! Took a little loop today just to put a few more miles on the lead. Of course I'm the only one paying attention in that little race :)

Well,
Jumbo fell off the map when real life issues took away much time and the internet. I have been lurking for a bit trying to determine how do rejoin the conversation. I have not ridden in over a year and am just now getting back to a place and time that I can ride again... Weight is back up and health is way down...just gives me more of a journey to enjoy.
My time is still tempered heavily by real life.

I know...that's exactly what happened. I think it was more one of those things where, when you go on a really grueling ride you kind of have a hard time getting in the saddle again?
I've done email with her, and she is still riding for enjoyment, and laying off the whole goal thing. And she's playing the cello!
That's why, when I used to post here more, I was kind of fiesty about trying to make sure that there was room for people to NOT push themselves too much. Sometimes (and I'm not talking about YOU GUYS, who seem to knock goals down and thrive on that kind of quantifiable achievement) people can make unrealistic goals as a way to motivate themselves, but then quit out of frustration/shame/feeling of failure. For some people, it is better to set very reasonable goals, and then surprise yourself with your achievement. Especially if they have a history of being discouraged by not following through with fitness plans.
Think of being a teenager, when you ride without a speedometer, and you just go adventuring. And you lose weight, so that makes you like it even more, and you ride more. And that makes you lose weight... and so on. You can see where that would be a very viable way of achieving fitness for many people.
But for you goal setters: RIDE ON!

Jumbo, my man, I let out a real-life "woohoo!" when I saw this post. Get in the place you need to be in, then give big liberty blue some quality time.

Wow, I hope she keeps with both. It was a really tough day for her in Mille Lacs, I remember that. I hope our (cain, pupsocket, and mine) antics weren't too much for her.
I agree that the goal thing can be depressing. I only try to set a few big ones, two this year. In both cases, I didn't quite make them, but they were so big in my mind that getting close felt great. I missed a day and a half of RAGBRAI for differing reasons and did 100 instead of 120 last Saturday.
I am happy with both, but I do think that setting even small goals and not making them can send you into reverse when you are starting. It's a frame of mind that I have been in regarding my health for years. Only in the last 2 years, I have been able to really set any kind of goal for health that I could take seriously and make progress towards.

I kind of decided I was screwing with the vibe too much.... but I still peruse! I thought about you all this year when they had the ride around Mille Lacs, but I was busy trying to get everything done to leave town and didn't go on the ride. I just wish it was 2 weeks earlier....

The end of April my wife and I bought a foreclosed acreage out in the country. The house needed a lot of work to finish and make nice. Our loan gave us 6 months to complete the project. I've spend the entire summer working day and night on the house and property getting it in tip top shape. I went weeks and months without riding or running. It's been TOUGH trying to keep the weight off. I'm happy and disappointed to say that I weigh about 210 right now. That's about 10-15 over my lowest. The good news is the house is done and I now have time to start riding and running again... just in time for winter. :( I dug the trainer out of the barn and the road bike out of the garage and set them up in the house. I've been trying to get out and run and ride my hybrid in the cold yet. Somewhere in all the house projects I found time to knock the wife up also.:roflmao2::roflmao2: So now I have a wife who's 9 weeks pregnant and throwing up day and night. So in June 09 I'll be a dad. :thumb:

Did you put a technical single track somewhere on that acreage? Maybe a wooden velodrome? You know, for the baby to play on. Congrats!

I wish I had enough acreage for a single track. I only have 3 acres so it gets pretty boring riding around in circles. I can get the dogs to follow me around the yard for about 5 laps then they just stand in the middle and watch me ride around in a circle like a moron.

You gotta lay it out like a bowl of spaghetti. Winding and crisscrossing itself w/ some logs to jump, holes to jump, ladders, tight hairpins, etc. Or you could just put in a pump track. :D
